When Kojima did his Criterion Closet thing he made it clear how many movies just aren't distributed in Japan and how Criterion releasing them was a big thing

i have nothing negative to say about them. and the criterion channel is by far the best 10 dollars a month I spend. Even gave my dad the password so he could watch Yi YI, Woman in The Dunes, The Ascent, and a bunch of others I've recommended him. Going home for the weekend so gonna watch a bunch of films with the folks. Trying to convince my mom to see Blue Velvet, but not sure she'll be able to endure it. She couldn't even get through 20 minutes of the Ascent which is really not a violent film

we have Folio etc for books and Criterion etc for movies but the music industry us just handing it over to streaming. is there a label doing uniform, boutique album releases

Lmao we usually cater to her sensitivity but occasionally convince her to take on a brutal film.
When I was in high school we were watching 12 years a slave in theaters and she made me drive her home halfway through because it was too violent for her.
And surprisingly she's become much more sensitive since then (10 years ago)
It's strange because my mom was a trauma therapist (now retired) so she would hear the most f***ed up s*** all the time in her job. But for whatever reason movies are too much for her

Apparantly Paul Schraders Mishima has never been released in Japan in theaters or DVD, like no one there has seen it, even though it's a Japanese film. Crazy because it was an entire Japanese cast + crew (besides Schrader) Maybe the best biopic I've seen so weird it never made it over there.
