tbh it's probably a better album than Surfs Up and far more significant (as well as more consistent. some obvious duds on Surfs Up)

But other than 3 maybe 4 songs on Pet Sounds (GOK being their unequivocal opus) I think I prefer Surfs Up because the highs on that album are so exquisitely striking to me and I still play them routinely. Gotta love that album title/cover as well

One of my favorite songs ever. Been debating the last couple years whether to add this to my Greatest of All Time Songs playlist, maybe now is the time

I know ya'll dislike the 1975 but that song and album is clearly the biggest influence on their sound, think the lead singer even mentioned it. Underrated band by this thread. Hated by @op. But that weird fam member @suzuki agrees with me I think that they are very very solid despite being unashamedly derivative, in the same way that early MCR/FOB were very very solid.

Need to get this on Vinyl too. What an album cover
But I got like 50 records don't even own a vinyl player

Also think this jawn is becoming one of my top 500
Will give it a year before adding to see if it still hits as hard.

The not-good songs on Surf's Up weigh that one down, they really ran out of ideas with Take a Load Off Your Feet and Student Demonstration Time, but the closing trio makes up for them.

Sunflower is the Beach Boys album that I plug when people want to move on from Pet Sounds. No bad songs and some truly brilliant highlights. Friends is in that tier too.

yeah student demonstration time was such a disappointing part of the album. Terrible song. Though I kinda like Take a Load Off Your Feet lol. I know it's far from the best on the album and the album could have done without it, but I enjoy it. I at least like all the songs on the album except the Mike Love ones and wonder how much better it would have been if he wasn't there. And then for him to have the gall to talk s*** about the Title Song I can't remember his exact quote but it was something like dismissing it as intellectual psychedical babble. The Child is Father of The Man is from Wordsworth and the other literary references connect deeply to the songs themes and while I can understand a random listener not enjoying/understanding it, to have a member of the band dismiss what may be one of their greatest songs (except for GOK ofc) is just bizzare imo.

I watch this every year. I love when Gervais says “When I was writing my first joke…” then Chris Rock interrupts with “You mean last week?”

also the Wordsworth - Child is Father of The Man - coda at the end of Surfs Up is way superior to the one on the Smile Sessions tbh.

Also reminds me of the legendary first page of Blood Meridian.

The mother dead these fourteen years did incubate in her own bosom the creature who would carry her off. The father never speaks her name, the child does not know it. He has a sister in this world that he will not see again. He watches, pale and unwashed. He can neither read nor write and in him broods already a taste for mindless violence. All history present in that visage, the child the father of the man.

probably read the first few pages of that book 50 times

With more set-up. I rewatched Chewed Up to hear what Louie said and it sounds way more normal.

I haven't heard much of his stuff, but yeah that song, the production, the lyrics, and the totally inimitable vocal performance Just a totally weird concept for a song lol.

Also a song when I play for other people they're either like "bro what is this s***, change the song now", or they laugh cuz it's kind of funny sounding
