I just want to get a first draft done so I can start listening to albums I haven’t heard yet. I doubt I could even do 70.
@op hasn’t made an alt yet
I haven’t
I did hear about Devo rejecting every single one of his suggestions
They probably heard about how Eno shot town all Tom Tom Clubs ideas and got revenge
he tried to torpedo any pop success they were gonna get wanted strictly "non commercial" ideas. Only grudgingly admitted Genius of Love was good after it blew up and had a huge effect on even hip hop and s***.
So I take it their other albums are better than this one?
Eh I like most of their stuff but they earlier ones are less polished and poppy than that one. I think listen to the debut and if you don't like that either you probably won't like anything in between

I didn’t find the album poppy at all. I also on the last page didn’t care much for a record that made your top 10 of the 80’s—so I’m assuming we just have very different taste.
Listening to their debut…..
Yeaaaaaah this is boring. Some interesting guitar noodling and a guy sleepwalking through the songs.
None of y'all have Mermaids logged
surely somebody has seen it
@RASIE ?
Nope. Adding to my watchlist now tho

I know you're down for some peak Cher and Winona at the same time

You're crazy for that one, Hats is goated
I mean COME ON
!https://youtu.be/tNgSwtRqLmg?si=gyGh8mZGhq1vSDVbIt’s good, but it bums me out
Listening to more Felt and it’s like every song starts off promising instrumentally and then Hayward’s voice comes in he and does nothing with it. Seems like Rain of Crystal Spires was the only song he put any passion or emotion into in terms of his vocals.

Okay these are nice

Yeah that one was cool too.

No, not at all. I would say it's their best and a major favorite of mine from that time period.
Strange Idols Pattern is in the same vein and has this masterpiece on it:

The Splendour of Fear is my favorite album from their early period compromised of vibey, oft-instrumental guitar jams. A lot of it sounds like this:

!https://youtu.be/AZLl_ZIThsY?si=GtcTlS_NSjTGBpCRYeah that first one is solid. The noodly instrumental stuff isn’t to my taste personally. They seem to have influenced a lot of artists I like, but most of what I’ve heard doesn’t resonate with me. It’s often too “vibey” as you put it or vauge—with Hawards vocals coming in and not doing much to compliment the composition. Like I’ve said Rain of Crystal Spires is one of my favorite songs ever, but a good majority of what they’ve put out besides that doesn’t connect on the same level. There’s little moments here and there from what I’ve heard, but that’s it.

I'm just really into the guitar tone, I think. I love that intimate, reverb soaked 80s sound. It's very calming.

I get excited anytime one of their songs starts, but it just rarely goes anywhere interesting for me. Maybe I’m just too focused on vocalists connecting with me on an intimate level through their general delivery/energy, melodic sensibility, or emotional passion. I get all of that on Crystal Spires, but not often on anything else from them. The more I’m talking about them with you guys the more I’m appreciating them.
Best album
tbh it's probably a better album than Surfs Up and far more significant (as well as more consistent. some obvious duds on Surfs Up)
But other than 3 maybe 4 songs on Pet Sounds (GOK being their unequivocal opus) I think I prefer Surfs Up because the highs on that album are so exquisitely striking to me and I still play them routinely. Gotta love that album title/cover as well
