Yeah 280 is mind-numbing nonsense

I've always done this, for over a decade at least. These days I listen to a new album on my way to work and then another on the way back. In a 5 day work week that's 10 new albums a week. There's 52 weeks in a year. 280 ain't hard. Re-listens tend to happen on nights and weekends when I'm trying to relax.

You can see my last.fm numbers. My top 50+ I go back to 2, 3, 4+ times and the rest I don't really go back to. I've probably heard my absolute favorites upwards of 10 times. That works for me. If I don't like something, I don't really care to return to it unless it's a massive deal that everyone is talking about or it's an artist I really like in general. So that's how I do it.

Why are you so pressed about someone engaging with music in a way that you don't I'm in a really good place with it

The way you casually said 281 made it sound like you marinated that many albums over the year while still maintaining every other aspect of life. If a large majority are one listens that you feel weren't worth more than one, I understand

what percent of your listening do you think is current music?

i feel like ive been doing like 50 or so new albums per year for the past few years but its gotta be like 5% of my total listening, if i dedicated less time for dust id prob be similar numbers to you. i cant do so many one-and-done listens though unless i really hate it which doesnt ever happen. ends up feeling like i never even listened at all, im trying for 3 as absolute minimum nowadays (but not for a real digestion)

i think im weird with first listens in general though, even for albums i end up loving they usually dont do much for me. always gets better on the next listens. maybe cuz i dont pay as much attention the first time usually.

I’m not quite on noir’s level, but I probably listen to 170-200 new albums each year

More than I thought and quite a few on the fence

This year it shifted mostly to newer music but some years it's less current.

In 2018 I actually listened to an album a day from my RYM wishlist, so that was 365 old albums I had never before. It was my New Year's Resolution and I actually did it. That was way crazier than what I'm doing now.

i think i just get distracted too easily to sit down with that many new albums a year.

Also I can't listen to music while working.

And I probably sleep quite a bit more than the average human does but that's just my depression.

Half the time I'm at work I'm blaring my work playlist on the speaker with bangers from all decades and the other half I'm zoned out on headphones going through tons of new music. Definitely jukes the stats.

I didn't listen to a lot of older stuff I didn't already know last year, but it would definitely boost the numbers. I was really into spiritual jazz and got into Pharaoh Sanders in a big way, so quite a few of those older albums would be his.

if its new-to-me albums per year its prob well over 500 atp

regularly listening to 2 new album a day is unthinkable for the marination mon

@Noir is a musician so he listens different than us but I dont know how you do it

need to keep a properly balance between old and new for a healthy and growing marination cycle

if it was something crazy like 1/5 of my album listens being first-listens id understand more but its way less than that

id have no desire in just listening to like one new album a week or something instead or just focusing almost entirely on stuff i already know well. kinda would defeat the purpose in me having so much interest to learn about new stuff
