Listened to The Beach Boys Love You album for the first time all the way through. It’s a really interesting album. Their haggard voices still trying to hit those notes in contrast with the weird early synth stuff is pretty neat.

It’s definitely an oddity. I don’t think it’s quite as good as some of its fans make it out to be, but I see what’s interesting about it. Patti Smith defending it at the time in a piece reminds me of when Mitski did the same for Weezer’s Pacific Daydream.

Lol i heard about 300 albums that were new to me in the past year. Think its doable if you listen to music 3 4 hrs every day

yeah if we’re strictly talking new releases from the current year I’m usually right around 100

Mostly brooklynvegan and pitchfork, plus sometimes I just search “new album releases in x genre”

I did get into a lot of new bands last year but not like I used to. I used to eat up albums like candy. It's from lack of interest more than anything. If one or two songs don't grab me I just forget about it.

would also really recommend Service, it's half japanese comedy skits so skip those but def worth checking out, has some of their best songs on it

here are some side projects/records they worked on during their peak pop years that are essential

Akiko Yano - Tadaima - Sakamoto's then wife - Sakamoto produced , bugged out really weird and unique synth pop record. this is the best but the other records she released around this time are super interesting

Taeko Ohnuki - Sunshower - GOATED city pop record with all the YMO boys playing on it

Pacific - hosono x yamashita instrumental proto city pop - gorgeous record

Happy End - Kazemachi Roman - Hosono's pre-YMO folk rock band with eiichi ohtaki - really awesome psych/folk record

Paraiso - not quite YMO but all the gang are here, basically a hosono solo record with a bunch of great synth pop songs

Neuromantic - Takahashi pop record with phil manzanera and andy mackay from Roxy playing all over it. bangers only

this barely scratches the surface u can go very deep on city/techno pop records they worked on tons in the 80s as well as the large amount of hosono/sakamoto solo/side projects

I respect the 200-300 album thing but holy hell I could never do that. It's always my goal to watch around 200 films a year but def slacking on that big time.

I respect it but I could never do that. Treating music like homework would defeat the entire purpose of listening to it in the first place for me.
