The album is fine. I listened to it last night since Kanye's album didn't drop and was like w.e. I don’t get why critics are deciding to champion Taylor Swift and this album as a masterpiece when it's really only slightly above average. Seems like music publications these days are just hype machines.
I swear some of the melodies/lyric are ripped straight from Phoebe Bridgers and I know TSwift is a fan of Phoebe too so...
The Independent wastes no time at all explaining why the album is being hailed as a musical revelation:

literally don't care about 95% of publications these days
even p4k post 2015 has been hella mid
also how a lot blogs have either been bought out by bigger companies or shut down has added insult to injury
Pitchfork post-1995*

the f*** kinda name is Roisin
one of those weird irish ones
Her singles from Self-titled – Speak Now are endlessly replayable for me, but that's about it. (Particularly "Mean" from Speak Now.)
Can't believe music journos were pushing 1989 as her "transition into full-on Pop music"...after her previously album had "We Are Never Getting Back Together" and "I Knew You Were Trouble" as giant lead singles
I'll never understand why people called it a transition to pop like she ain't always been poppy af. She was one of the least country "country" singers out there imo
i don’t own a wife beater lmao you bullshitting but what i said is facts
you know you desperate when you gotta lie
You own a pitbull but no wifebeater?

i don’t own a wife beater lmao you bullshitting but what i said is facts

at least you always tell me i look good

I remember back in 2008/2009 there was a Facebook group called
“I’m from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania and I don’t have a southern accent”

Her self-titled and a lot of Fearless was def very heavy on Dixie Chicks' style, but after that she for sure progressed more and more Pop. By the time 1989 came out, all publications trying to spin it as her Pop-makeover album looked like complete jokes
You own a pitbull but no wifebeater?
!https://youtu.be/ERp27STAV7Ena i live in an apartment lmao i got cats, i just walk a couple pits

ehh her first two albums def had a lot of country influence
Holy f*** didn't realize the acclaim for her new album was that excessive
95 on metacritic
They need those clicks and Taylor's name is an easy way to get them I guess
Exactly. Lots of critics clearly get a hard-on for a pop artist making the transition into "serious" singer/songwriter. (which doesn't even make sense btw) It's the kind of thing that excites them. Same thing when a comedy actor/actress dips their toes in more serious dramatic roles.
I think critics like to think of themselves as at the forefront when it comes to seeing something really new or interesting happening in music (or any scene). After all, they're supposed to be immersed in that world.
What comes out of that, like right now, is in my opinion disingenuous criticism. Not that the album was a bad album or anything.

Literally everything you said is why I am not impressed with Rina

I guess I worded that wrong. I meant that there was always huge pop undertones and the transition from one album to another was exaggerated like it wasn't obvious that she always had "pop" in her
Ireland

Rina?
