Be honest with yourself. What do you really want?

“Besides valuing fame, people typically value wealth. These two values may seem independent, but a case can be made that the primary reason we seek wealth is that we seek fame. More precisely, we seek wealth because we realize that the material goods our wealth can buy us will win the admiration of other people and thereby confer on us a degree of fame.”

    EDIT

The quote is from a book called “A Guide to the Good Life” by William B. Irvine and he’s using fame in a very broad sense.

Here’s another quote from the book regarding fame to better explain in what context it’s being compared to wealth in this thread:

“The fame in question comes in varying degrees. Some want to be known around the world. Some seek not world fame, but regional or local fame. Those who don’t actively pursue even local dame nevertheless seek popularity within their social circle or recognition in their chosen profession. And almost everyone seeks the admiration of friends and neighbors. They are convinced that gaining fame (in some very broad sense of the word) will make them happy.”

"You rather be more famous than rich " - Pusha T

I'd rather be unknown and with a moderate amount of wealth (enough to buy a house and sustain my modest lifestyle or make sure I have a stream of revenue to sustain it) than both famous as f*** and rich as f***

    Read the quote on OP.

The quote in the OP says "we" but is just a blanket statement. Who is WE.

A lot of people enjoy their privacy and don't want their name out there especially with the fact they have a s***load of money. Look at lotto winners who try to stay private.

Tons of people want the wealth without the fame. As long as I can take care of the people I care about, I'm famous enough (within my own clique, that is).

How much wealth? And why? What would you do with it?

Enough wealth to take care of the people I value and enough to follow and do my passions with no restrictions (within reason).

Tbh, I could probably do most of that with $2 million (at least what my hobbies are now).

    “We” is most people.

It also says “we seek wealth because we realize that the material goods our wealth can buy us will win the admiration of other people and thereby confer on us a degree of fame”.

A DEGREE of fame, ANY degree of fame.

You said “as long as I can take care of the people I care about, I’m famous enough”. We could say that you indeed seek wealth because you want fame, even if you only want to be famous within your own clique.

    I want no fame.

I only want the wealth to give to the people I believe deserve it. A bonus is just them appreciating me in return the way I've appreciated them.

I want both. Ultimate goal is to have arenas all around the world screaming my name, and have a disgusting amount of money because I've lived in poverty too long. I know its a shallow dream but idc
