That is a perceptive quote.
Seems like whenever people get enough money they start needing other people to know.
I can’t imagine there are many people who would only want fame. Surely most people who desire the fame do so in part because it’s likely to bring wealth?
It’s the other way around I think.
But money is power why would you choose fame over that
Power gives you fame tho.
But you still flexing. You want the money to flex on other people. Even if it’s a small group of people, you want to be the “famous” one there.
It’s the other way around I think.
I don’t think that’s true at all. Plenty of incredibly wealthy people in this world you or I wouldn’t be able to name.
“We” is most people.
It also says “we seek wealth because we realize that the material goods our wealth can buy us will win the admiration of other people and thereby confer on us a degree of fame”.
A DEGREE of fame, ANY degree of fame.
You said “as long as I can take care of the people I care about, I’m famous enough”. We could say that you indeed seek wealth because you want fame, even if you only want to be famous within your own clique.
This just dilutes the meaning of the word “fame” so much that it becomes pointless.
If you’re a mid level manager on 40k and you look to achieve a senior role on 100k, mainly for the money.
You’ll become better known in your company as one of the senior leaders, but I don’t think that falls under the scope of “fame”, and I can’t imagine being well known in this context is much of motivator for most people
Power gives you fame tho.
Not necessarily. There are plenty of millionaires/billionaires that wouldn’t be considered famous
wealth
if I could chill out in a nice house on the beach in the tropics with my girl for the rest of my life, funding my own projects here and there, I wouldn't mind
i would like to be famous more tbh
i got a lot of s*** to say, and having the attention of so many people could hell me make the world a better place

same and one perk of being famous is that you can make money using your fame too
the only reason id want to be famous is if i did some hugely positive humanitarian/artistic/genius s*** that deserves total recognition and respect. f*** celebrity fame

You’re right, the way I’m using the word fame is very diluted. The quote on OP is from a book called “A Guide to the Good Life” by William B. Irvine.
Here’s another quote from the book regarding fame to better explain in what context it’s being compared to wealth in this thread:
“The fame in question comes in varying degrees. Some want to be known around the world. Some seek not world fame, but regional or local fame. Those who don’t actively pursue even local dame nevertheless seek popularity within their social circle or recognition in their chosen profession. And almost everyone seeks the admiration of friends and neighbors. They are convinced that gaining fame (in some very broad sense of the word) will make them happy.”
