its performative and detracts from actions people can meaningfully take to hurt the capitalist class, like joining/starting a militant labour union or tenants union. im not saying that boycotts are entirely useless, but they need to be well organized and precise in their demands. BDS has specific pressure targets rather than trying to boycott every single company with ties to Israel, which is practically impossible atm
for this one, telling people to "abstain from making any purchases, whether in store or online, but particularly not from big retailers or chains" is way too broad and doesn't specify what it wants to achieve. it seems like Target and Amazon are pressure targets, but still, whats the end goal besides "sending a message to Billionaires"?
Forgive me but I thought sending the message to billionares was the message today. It was said to shop small businesses in cash instead of supporting those major companies/corporations.

but what kind of message is it sending? "look here jeff, we can stop buying from amazon for 1 day. better watch your back buddy". like is the goal to increase wages and worker protections? decrease grocery prices? stop collusion between the capitalist class and politicians? absolutely no one feels threatened by this
useless + amazon host millions of websites with aws you're not gonna hurt them with boycott
My fault guys I bought something this morning off Amazon
I’m an enabler of the Amazon empire

But what’s the harm in doing it for today? Maybe it could result in the start of something more organized. I just fail to see why we’re putting down people for trying something here.
Just copped some doordash

This is why little boycotts are important, it broadens the dialouge and gets better, more important ideas rolling. Thank you for contributing to the thread 🫡

there isnt any inherent harm and im not trying to persuade you against participating. you're right that it could lead to a more sustained boycott over time. in order for that to happen there has to be more specific targets and goals in mind though
it siphons energy away from meaningful action and when theres inevitably no impact in the end, it can make people feel disillusioned with organizing.
The website of this “People’s Union” does give the impression that this is a serious entity
This makes no sense
It has no goals
It has no stated motivations
It isn’t extended, merely offsets costs by a day
It isn’t organized
It provides no alternatives for those who need to sustain
It offers no inspiration
It doesn’t educate the unfamiliar on whatever motivations it may have
But what’s the harm in doing it for today? Maybe it could result in the start of something more organized. I just fail to see why we’re putting down people for trying something here.
Can you explain how this is “trying” and how this “could” result in organization

Conservatives have been boycotting companies for years successfully but now that people are targeting businesses that rolled back DEI initiatives it's a problem
Buying the iPhone 16e today
My phone got f***ed yesterday and I had to buy a new one this morning
Conservatives have been boycotting companies for years successfully but now that people are targeting businesses that rolled back DEI initiatives it's a problem
Conservatives are asking for a companies to be racist again, Leftists are asking for a fundamental restructuring of the economic system
Vastly different goals, vastly different methods to success

conservatives are just united in hatred. you really just move different when you're like that fr
