I'm not sure if you have any experience with writing but if you don't I'd recommend keeping it that way and going in blind. It sounds weird but when I first decided to go in this direction I took all types of classes, in-person and online, paid and free... and in the end they hampered me more than they helped me. I would go as far as to say I came out of it a worse writer. The majority of them just tell you what not to do and by the time they're done they leave you feeling so crippled and discouraged. They make it feel like writing is impossible because it's just a bunch of, "Oh no you can't do that", "Never put this in a screenplay", "If you want your story to be good it can't have this in it". Then you come to find out that the person who just "taught" you how to write had a hand in writing Battlefield Earth and your time feels even more wasted. Learn the basic formatting of a screenplay and then get to writing, there's gonna be a lot of bumps, tons of mistakes... let it all happen. That's how you learn.

thanks man, that's helpful. it's definitely easy to get bogged down by theory or a bunch of rules to follow which I think would slow me down. I think I'm going to read some screenplays of films I like to get an idea of format and take it from there

Good advice, im taking a class just to get formatting of screenplays and hopefully learn the basics of story telling like the 3 acts of a story etc and plan to go from there

Is it bad to jump around two different projects. I'm in the midst of writing two scripts but both entirely separate genres. I've thoroughly outlined each of them with character bibles and fully plotted out my beat sheets. Its like some days i'm in the mood for one and other days the other script. I feel like i'm good jumping between them being cohesive wondering if anyone's done the same.

Is anyone here primarily an editor? The process of editing, especially on film, scares the f*** out of me considering I know so little about it.

These days even most movies shot on film are digitally scanned and edited on avid anyway

Never, I find that it usually helps to jump around. An idea for one project might work better for an other etc..

Bumping this because I just wrote out an outline for a horror shoot that I want to shoot next year. Just want to throw the idea out there. It explores individual fears from the superficial to the personal. The point of it though isn’t really to say something but I really want to do something with practical effects. A lot of stuff that was done in the 80s like blood effects, limb tearing, deteriorating bodies etc. Take that and maybe apply it to 2021 (or 2022 when it would likely shoot.)

I wouldn’t say it’s gruesome all throughout but I want to film something fun within the next year and horror is one of those genres that seems like the most fun to shoot. Never wrote horror but I don’t see this as something to tell an amazing story (which is still something I would like but it’s not the point). I’m really interested in working with practical effects.

First time directing a short with crew and actors (a few days ago) was a bit of a mess, so many issues and I started to hate my own script

Kinda put me off involvement in filmmaking for now but I won't give up yet

How did you find producers and distributors?

I’ve been slacking on writing scripts. Wrote a short film but full length feature takes long time and I usually already have an ending I really like in my head and tend to rush to it
