I feel this way too and this has been my main complaint for XVI, I wrote more about this in the JRPG thread but the way the female characters are written is just awful

Jill pretty much doesn't interact with anyone outside of Clive, there are intense moments in the game where it seems like the writers forget she is Shiva and they just have her stand around, majority of the cutscenes she is in she is either saying nothing or nodding her head, they also give Torgal some background that he is actually a Northern wolf that can transform into Fenrir in order to protect Jill and they never bring it back up in the game? We don't even get a scene with Jill acknowledging Torgals history like what the f\*\*\*?

The games story is entirely focused on Clive and while that does strengthen his character that comes at the expense of literally everyone else (except from Joshua since he is such an important figure in Clives character). When you are on the field and you are taking a side quest the party member that you are currently with pretty much doesn't exist within the context of the sidequest so they don't comment on anything that is going on, I understand this is because party members move in and out of the party but its extremely jarring. For some reason when you do get dialogue between characters in the field its also extremely short and just some small background about the location you are in like "this bridge used to be broken", I feel like the writers got tunnel visioned on writing a story focused on Clive that they forgot they had other characters they actually needed to write about

I totally agree with this, man. I had such high hopes for Jill that she’s be able to stand next to Tufa/Aerith/Yuna but…no. She’s being heavily underutilized so far and I’m like 60% of the way in.

Going into the Bahamut fight I was FULLY expecting her to join since Clive would obviously need help there. Joshua joining for the fight was hype as hell but what was Jill doing the entire time? Playing with Torgal lmao? The game acts like she’s not one of the most powerful characters in the verse it’s f\*\*\*ing insane We literally see her holding her own against Titan at the beginning of the game and she keeps up with Clive in combat pretty easily. F***ing Gav has more presence than her in cutscenes I love Gav but that’s just unacceptable.

In the past I’ve been dismissive of the idea that FF is getting worse with female characters by saying it’s just XV (and XVI is certainly a major step up in that regard) but it is so strange to me that a series with so many iconic female characters and such a huge female audience is going BACKWARDS in this regard when they did NOT have this problem before to this extent.

So many games back in the day had female party members who just prayed and clasped their hands and that was it while FF was off that train by the time VI came out and outright parodied and subverted that trope with VII.

Even before I got into the series, as a kid I had this perception of FF as this sort of emo story driven game that had equally masculine and feminine aesthetics. That era has aged super f***ing well in a lot of ways because they did stuff with their female/gay-coded characters that other AAA games are only just now catching up to. It’s no secret that FF is basically never included “AAA games are soulless” discussion and I honest to god think that the series’ more women-friendly aspects is what sets it apart compared to other JRPGs and games in general. I hope they never lose that and XVII is a return to form in that sense

like fine no party members but the fact you can't combo with the party members in battle outside of Torgal is criminal

One thing I think the writing for this game’s women is missing is annoying and gremlin like tendencies as well as horrible women. The peak FFs had women who were strong and serious but also caring, funny, sometimes annoying and honeslty…pretty realistically written and multifaceted. Aerith and Tifa feel like girls I know in real life. Selphie too. And Garnet. And Yuna. And annoying ass Rinoa

In XVI it’s basically just Mid I’m pretty sure? And from where I’m at she’s not nearly as likeable as them.

Other than that, Benedikta’s properly horrible which is great and then you find out she was forced into prostitution and saved by a man and that’s the last thing she thinks of before she dies and then she once she dies she becomes fuel for another man’s revenge

As far as I'm concerned Jill may as well be touching Lunafreya territory which is even worse because Lunafreya must have been on the screen for like 10 minutes of the whole game. Jill is with Clive the majority of the game and they don't do anything with her character except for use her as a tool to develop Clive

I'm honestly convinced that Jill is a character that was created after the original script was finished and then shoved into the game to give Clive some romance.

XV was bad enough but 2 games in a row with female characters being this poorly written is vey questionable. I feel like during the promotion run for this game they were pretty confident on saying that Jill is an important part of the game; having played the game myself now I'm not sure where that confidence even came from.

Benedikta was also a character I was really hype for since they she was a big part of the trailers/promotions. Unfortunately she was killed of immediately and used as a tool because competently written female characters are not allowed

The side quest would hit A LOT BETTER if they had your party members acknowledge more what was happening in the entire side quest. They are all kind of just there for the ride often saying nothing, giving nothing, no form of real interaction on what the player is doing in combat or in the world.

Benedikta was criminal and should have been saved for later game kill especially when most of the men characters were forgettable outside of Barnabas. Her dying that early just to set off Hugo or motivation for the male character we see f\*\*\* her on screen was zzz then combine that with her being a victim activating her Eikon zzz. Like many baffling decisions there of just mind numbing

  • Jul 1, 2023

If the game handled women better, had diversity people wise, party system, rpg mechanics sometimes play as others because Clive didn't carry that for me nor is it realistic for him to. Then this s*** would have hit a lot better. Especially with that final boss situation of fighting for humanity. It would more feel like a fight for humanity if we saw more of humanity

For as obnoxious as gaming journalists can be, I’m glad they’re calling attention to Square’s recent backslide wrt representation. I’m loving the game too but Square as a whole has got to be more consistent with this especially on its flagship franchise.

    Okay Lunafreya tier is crazy

She’s just so…boring. She has glimpses of greatness here and there, particularly when she puts some bass in her voice but that doesn’t happen often. My mine immediately goes to the cutscene before the Oriflamme dungeon with Cid where they’re hiding in a brothel in that scene she’s visibly agitated and way more snippy and sarcastic. And her voice is more energized. I loved that direction for her but it seems like it was just a one off thing.

I’m not as down on Jill as you are as I’m definitely attached to her character and like her relationship with Clive but I agree they played it uncharacteristically safe with her.

Yeah Lunafreya tier is definitely an exaggeration but I am frustrated that she is present the majority of the game with nothing happening

Hope they deliver on character writing on XVII

Way too safe with her and most characters outside of Clive. Like the story gets crazier and more epic but all characters other than Clive consistently seemed unmoved by much of what is happening

the kill jill got was something but don't really see her change or develop substantially

The fact that if the FFVIIR project didn’t exist, we potentially could’ve been looking at:

    XVI (by CBU1) in 2020
    XVII (this game) in 2023
    XVIII (by CBU1) in 2025
    XIX (by CBU3) in 2029

they know the strength of Nostalgia. Also remakes you already have outline of story and quest so they just like "shit the money here and fans day 1 we got this". I do think there is value in combining some how the turn based combat of previous games and action of this. How best they execute that I don't know but I would love to see it.
