Just finished the game.
Someone mind telling me what this “big disappointing plot-twist surprise” ending was?
The ending was fine guys, lol. I mean I saw one guy earlier in this thread have doubts that there would even be future installments due to this “craaaazy ending”. Wtf you guys...
It is pretty interesting ending. I mean they flash to parts of the originals ending and epilogue and hint that stuff may be changed in future remake. I think it’ll follow the same main beats/locations but I think the story will change a little
post-ff7 depression
bought ff7 for 8 bucks off the PS store and now im playing it again
played through the extent of FF7R in the remastered original, finished in almost exactly 5 hours
can't wait for part 2 but i'm also eager to get back into the classic
seeing things I forgot or never noticed (johnny is a character in the OG, aerith's mom is actually named elmyra, the entire plate falling scene makes way more sense with the visual context than when I was a kid) i'm so stoked
One thing I must say after finishing and sitting on it for a few days is that, as technically “perfect” as the game is, the entire FEELING that the OG was able to give you is completely lost.
As pretty as the remake looked, as innovative as the battle system is, as finely tuned the soundtrack is, i was not emotionally moved at all. Literally not one bit, aside from maybe Aerith’s flashback in Haunted, and that’s even a stretch.
I replayed the OG a few months ago for the 11TH TIME and I teared up multiple times throughout the story.
And this is my issue with new video games in general. This is why I quit playing everything. 10-15 years ago, big business got ahold of the video game industry (which previously was “by nerds for nerds”) and changed everything. They now focus too much on “perfection” rather than the soul of these projects. There is very little magic to any of these games anymore. It switched from an artist’s platform, to a science platform. It went from right-brained, to left-brained.
FFVII OG has so much f***ing soul to it, I’ve never seen anything like it to this day. I appreciate the Remake remastering and beautifying everything I grew up with. I appreciate them making everything so cinematic that it rivals the biggest Hollywood movies. I appreciate the effort, don’t get me wrong. However, those things may be what we want, but are definitely not what we need.
On a technical level, the game is a solid 10/10. However I have to subtract a good amount for the lacking of soul and feeling. I was hoping that, in the midst of a bunch of trash titles in this industry that identifies as “cool” rather than “good”, this would be different. They unfortunately failed in this regard.
I’d give it an 8.5/10.
I don’t want a big budget action movie that leaves me feeling overstimulated.
I want that obscure independent film that leaves me thinking long after it’s ended and changes my worldview.
is wedge supposed to look feminine like that? this dudes eyes and eyebrows on some super girly s*** and don't match the rest of him
I want to know this too

I agree mostly, i dont have the reverence that some have for the story but the original had such a handle on tone. One relatively minor thing that encapsulated the disconnect between the og and remake is when you finally scale the wall in wall market. The og couldnt have been More than three screens of prerendered background but the music coupled with the climb and knowing what was gonna go down in shinra hq. while the whole midgar s*** is condensed in the og but it feels more earned than the drawn out bs boss battle in this one. It really feels at points they’re trying toserve the runtime rather than the story.

F*** yes, well said. And the example of wall market you gave is perfect.
Yo people hating on Nomura acting like Ff8 aint bonkers ass s***.
I mean difference is he didnt direct FF8 and he was only the writer for the characters back story so he's actually not really responsible for that

Damn I really gotta upgrade my pc by then because im not even sure it can run FFXV
Bruh chapter 8 is f***ing BLOATED. Took me 4+ hours after doing all the side quests. Unnecessary.

Yeah just a reminder to everyone how iconic and moving this moment was in the OG.
The Remake ruined a lot of scenes having to do with Aerith. Couldn’t stand this chapter.
Now that I think about it, the highest points in the game were the first few chapters and the last few chapters, with a few tiny spikes peppered in between (Haunted, Wall Market).
Anyone else agree?

Yea it was a drag imhopin they actually do an open world or semi open world for part two because They had to make midgar cramped bc its a city but damn it made side quests tedious. Like alot of walking without too much action.
I really enjoy the hunts in ff12 and i wish the side quest felt a bit more substantial and rewarding.
