Colin Powell was a real one. Sad his legacy and everything he accomplished has been deduced to what happened with George W bush.

I had the privilege of being able to listen to him speak twice. Once when he was doing an event for hbcus and young black military officers, actually earlier this year in February was the last time in fact

He paved a lot of ways for black men and women in the government sector as well and his book was a fantastic read.

Yeah yeah and carter gave shelter to the homeless and got like 2 noble prizes but he is still a peace of s***

We can all rest easy now knowing his soul is receiving the punishment he never got in life.

He was largely responsible for at least 500,000 civilian deaths in the Middle East/Central Asia and no amount of ghostwritten memoirs or motivational speeches will cleanse him of that sin.

Eh, he sold the war based on information he received from George W., CIA, d*** Cheney and top brass in the military.

He himself said the information he received was shaky, but he gave that speech to the UN anyways and oversold it because he put trust in the sources and at the end of the day he was sec def and they act on part of the president. Was he wrong for this? Of course and he had blood on his hands as well.

Cheney and the CIA is where 75% of the blame should lie, but everyone always goes back to Colin Powell and his speech to the UN. Never Cheney. Worked just like how it was supposed to.

Truthfully, that war was going to happen whether Colin Powell gave that speech or not.

Oh trust me I'm blaming all of them. It's a shame they'll never be tried for their crimes

    No one ever blames Cheney??

Everyone in the administration deserves blame. And “just following orders” from the president isn’t a satisfying excuse. He could’ve refused, or told the truth to the UN, or make a big show of resigning in protest.

He was a very respected public figure and his dissenting word could have caused pause among the international community and the American public. Instead he toed the line of the Bush administration, like he did for Bush Sr in Panama years earlier.

He can talk about “regrets” or “mistakes” or “bad intelligence” all he wants, but in the moment he had the most agency, when he was a a crossroads with one of the paths leading to genocidal war and untold decades of permanent destabilization and terror, he did as he always did - which is put his head down and follow orders. The perfect military man.

Feel like you can say this about a lot of black people or other minorities in politics.

These kids are virtue signaling, they have no idea what they’re talking about. The Iraq war was created by politicians with an agenda and intelligence officials with no proper oversight. Colin Powell was a soldier who trusted his colleagues and subordinates with bad info. He was in a bad place giving consul to bush administration, while been fed shaky info from intelligence community. Mistake we’re made but no one can accuse him of operating in bad faith. And like you said that war was gonna happen with or without him.

Colin Powell was the SECRETARY OF STATE. He’s just as complicit as the rest of them for not verifying such stupid and outlandish informations. How are you gonna try and absolve a member of the Presidents Cabinet for actions under his administration using an argument as naive as “oh but he had bad info!” ITS HIS JOB TO NOT HAVE BAD INFO. HES AS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FACT THAT WE GOT A MILLION IRAQIS KILLED AS ANYONE ELSE IN THE BUSH ADMIN

Not absolving him. He’s culpable of course, he’d probably agree but to which extent that might be where we disagree. But that war was sold to the entire western world. Sold by who who knows exactly but the majority were in favor of it at the time, again misled by bad intel. CIA pulls officers from the region meant it was hard to verifies information from assets. It was all doomed from the start.
