From my understanding of Colin Powell, he was very much your prototypical Black republican. However as he has gotten older and has seen how much the party has changed, he was also capable of peeping the bullshit and distancing himself when needed.

His mindset was one of trying to get Black people a seat at the table. Now whether that seat was even worth sitting at, well I think that's something he would question himself as time would go by.
