The problem is these detention facilities shouldn't exist period. The goal should be to abolish their existence. Over 90% of asylum seekers come to the US having a place to stay with relatives. Why should they be detained in a detention facility for an average of up to three months in facilities filled with systemic racism and abuse?

Community-Based alternatives that is evidenced based exist. Profit is fueling the growth of detention facilities. It's great they're sleeping on a bed instead of floor, but lives are being destroyed directly and indirectly during their stay at these facilities.

Foster homes, group homes, and residential facilities like where kids taken by CPS go to. Of course, those are criminally underfunded while ICE facilities can be quite profitable.

Ok so your plan is to immediately have every single child who comes in placed in foster care. The article states there's around 7000 unaccompanied kids coming in per day. You think logistically it is possible to receive, process, and place 7k kids in foster homes per day? And where would they wait while this process is happening?

So what should be done with a child that you don't know if their parents are even in the states
