The Parental Rights in Education bill, also known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, passed Thursday in the House Education and Employment Committee largely along party lines.
According to the bill, parents may take legal action against their child’s school district and be awarded damages if they believe any of its policies infringe on their “fundamental right to make decisions regarding the upbringing and control of their children.”
Other advocates have criticized the language of one of the Florida bill’s provisions, which would require educators and administrators to effectively “out” known LGBTQ+ students to their parents without their consent.
“A school district may not encourage classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students,”
Harding clarified that as far as discussions regarding LGBTQ+ topics, the bill would specifically be in “situations where a teacher is encouraging or initiating conversations through a procedure the school is doing.” He said the bill would not bar discussions in a blanket method, but did say the parents of students should be made aware or “alerted” about the discussions.
Additionally, Harding said the bill would not preclude the teaching of LGBTQ+ history in K-12 classrooms. Regarding what the bill means by “encouraging” LGBTQ+ discussions, Harding said the bill would prevent schools from initiating those conversations through items like questionnaires or events, but rather that the bill focuses on “specific curriculum or coursework that puts” a student “in a situation where they have to have” a discussion about LGBTQ+ topics.
once again instead of actually doing anything to fix the fundamental problem in the education system let's just pass some arbitrary regulations that'll work
for clarity bill has not fully passed yet but is out of the Florida House and DeSantis will almost certainly sign once it gets to him
Why does the naming of American legislation always sound like a parody of themselves
Is that s*** on purpose

it's definitely on purpose, it's one of those things which gets like embedded into public conscious and then because people assume or think things should happen or be a certain way, said people begin to act in the image of how they're presumed to be. like the patriot act is the best example of this probably historically. culture in the US is like over the wall obsessed with pathology and mythology
as a florida educator im not even entirely sure what this means lol
Don't say gay
but they still gon let white teachers say the n word when reading to kill a mocking bird??? yeah cut the whole state off

why not teach kids about sexuality though??? not like they're telling kids "be gay or else" like bruh theyre teaching kids these things so if they DO turn out to be gay, they not confused about themselves

Because conservatives can only get votes by playing into people's prejudice and fear for marginalized groups
Florida is about to become the gayest and most woke state due to reverse psychology. First they ban critical race theory and now this.

you know how there was a conservative twitter meltdown over scaremongering over tiktoks of like grad student assistant teachers saying they were going to "turn kids trans" and like 2016 culture war stuff like the "classroom gender unicorn" or whatever? basically what this bill does is ban any educator (seems to be teachers, counselors, etc.) from talking to students on any topic related to gender identity or sexuality concerning students as individuals - stuff on history (i.e. Stonewall) can still be discussed. it also bans any general planned curriculum which would be regarded as promoting students to talk or discuss their own sexuality/whatever; it only allows the concept of gay rights or similar to be discussed, not anything individualized by educators.
