Week 7: Calculated
8 1/2 (1963) Dir. Fredrico Fellini
I did a whole long ass write up for this at like 5am last night after I finished watching but to keep it relatively brief: I think this just became one of my favorite movies. A beautifully shot, delightfully meta autobiographical meditation on artistry and the plight of man. How Fellini was able to make a movie so deeply personal to his life and experiences be equally as relatable to the modern viewer 60 years later is remarkable..
This is also one of the few films to capture dreams and dream logic near flawlessly on film. Highly highly recommend if you haven’t seen it yet especially if you’re a creative type
Week 8: Deep Cuts
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011) Dir. David Fincher
I had no idea what this movie was actually about until last night. Not his best movie imo but it could grow on me. It did however put into perspective the current lull he’s in over at Netflix. Why do we have a Mank and not a sequel to this made by the same team?
The rhythm of the movie kept me engaged and once the plot began to get more complex I was fully onboard. I was fascinated by and rooting for Lisbeth’s character which made the ending sting quite a bit. That scene was brutal to watch in a way only Fincher’s clinically cold style could make work. By that I mean it was unflinching graphic and hopeless. I felt awful about having seen it. Nobody does realistically detestable people like Fincher.
I will say this movie kinda drags on towards the end. It feels like multiple times it’ll end and doesn’t. The movie was determined to wrap every single plot point which I appreciated, just wasn’t expecting it i suppose. The film resolved most of the main two plot points 20-30 mins before the actual end of the movie.
Kinda overlooked in Bergman catalogue by being different in the density of classy, light-hearted sensuality this has. Not in his upper works but yet still another admirable study on infidelity and infatuations and how those influence relationships, all these drowned in a soup of brilliant comedy. Another movie where Bergman reminds me of Dostoyevskij in crafting his characters (especially the archetypes) and story...
Week 8: Deep Cuts
It’s the most well known of Yorgos’ Greek films so it’s not much of a deep cut but it was my first viewing.
This s*** was bonkers. Now I know what people mean when they say Yorgos actually tamed his movies down when he started making them in English. Idk how one goes about getting funding for this
I read that its themes were a commentary on the Greek government but I also kinda felt like it was saying something about how humans domesticate animals. I enjoyed it though. Yorgos has one of the most surreal minds in Hollywood.
Side note: it looked like they were actually f***ing in some of those s***scenes
forgot to post but i'll do
week 7: four adventures of reinette and mirabelle (eric rohmer)
finally got more into rohmer after only having seen claire's knee many years ago, this one was sweet and slight. little short stories with beautiful imagery.
week 8: popeye (robert altman)
shelley's passing inspired me to finally get around to some unseen altman's like brewster mccloud and this. a really weird studio movie, bizarre to think this kind of thing could get made with such a famous IP. honestly pretty consistently great with only really falling off track in a few sequences. the origin of he needs me transcends out of the movie and gave such a lovely feeling. funny enough, this would make for a great double bill with querelle.
i've kept up so far but i think ill post all of mine when its done
Week 8 'Through a Glass Darkly' (1961) Directed by Ingmar Bergman

Maybe bi- weekly?
I can’t always make time for a movie so the extra space makes it feel like there is less pressure
