I'm way behind so I'm playing catch up this week:
Week 7 - Calculated
12 Monkeys (1995)
I had virtually zero idea what I was getting into with this. All I knew is that this ended up getting a TV adaptation on SyFy. Boy am I glad I went in blind. A time travel film about stopping a global disease outbreak paired with some absolutely insane visuals? Top it off with an batshit performance from Brad Pitt that I didn't know he had in him? I was locked in as soon as James got to the asylum. From there I was thoroughly entertained and even shocked with some of the choices made in this film. And this came from Terry Gilliam? Monty Python Terry Gilliam? This definitely has left some sort of impact on me.
4/5
Week 7:
really liked this. great performances all around but especially liked Annette Bening and Billy Crudup
This is… A LOT to sit with. Luca takes us to Italy for an awkward vacation with four people who uhh know and uhh get to know each other intimately. Really good vibes. Love the filmmaking as always from Luca but especially in this one his ability to capture the beauty of nature, architecture, and humans is just… perfect 🤌🏽
Was expecting a different type of film and I think my expectations threw me off. I'll have to come back to this on a different day but I did enjoy this once I got comfortable with what it was trying to do.
week 9: pi (darren aronofsky)
never watched this back when i was running through the aronofsky films but my bestie saw it recently n wanted to show me cause i'm going to be DP on his movie later this week and he felt this one inspired him a bit. we both agreed that aronofsky was kind of laying it on heavy and felt a but amateurish but there's a charm to that especially knowing that he did eventually hone it in to varying degrees throughout his career. its not bad for a debut and has ambitions

Week 9: Now It’s Dark - Gun Crazy
Was suggested this one by another user here after asking for lovers on the lam recs and it was cool to see one a whole decade before Bonnie & Clyde. It visually looked great and had some really cool shots. Standout scenes for me were the shooting contest and the getaway driver bank robbery where we stayed in the car. Story was pretty simple it didn’t get too much deeper than how far would you go to keep the girl but at only an hour and 25 minutes long I was engaged throughout
A decent heist movie combined with heavy noire tints that sometimes loses itself in its overreliant exposition. Characters can be generic but the film typical cat and mouse dynamic was classy enough and directed well to make me interested in exploring Melville's works later in the future.

Pi is a f***ing classic one of Aronofsky’s best for sure might even be his best tbh

Week 9: Now It’s Dark
The Lighthouse (2019) Dir. Robert Eggers
First time I watched this movie in 2019 I was so f***ing high that I thought I kept missing large chunks of the movie. Can’t tell if zooted is the worst or the best way to experience this. In any case modern classic.
