Songs like "I Gave You Power", "Black Girl Lost" and "If I Ruled the World" showed his immense growth as a songwriter. And the prod is really good imo, I like how he took a different direction.
I agree with all of this but songs like The World Is Yours, Lifes A B****, One Love, NY State of Mind are top tier songs that I feel like just weren’t topped
the thing about illmatic is that there are no worst songs
its just that consistent throughout
Now playing: It Was Written
The Message is my favorite Nas intro

It Was Written definitely feels like an evolution from what Nas was doing on Illmatic, mostly for better
It’s funny seeing reviews from the 90s say Nas was struggling with pop crossovers or trying to go mainstream when 25 years later it just sounds like pretty much everything else from that time, that’s not bad though
The beats got a bigger budget and Nas tries for more catchier hooks but lyrically and flow wise he hasn’t missed a single step in this sequel and he’s still as cold and effortless as ever (see; I Gave You Power)
However I do think Illmatic is still better than this album, not every hook or beat works and for trying to reach mainstream success i think other albums from this time did it better (like Reasonable Doubt)
Still amazing though and I’d give it a 9/10
Favourite Tracks, The Message, Street Dreams, I Gave You Power, Watch Dem, Take It In Blood, Affirmative Action, If I Ruled The World
Least Favourite: Nas Is Coming or Black Girl Lost
i probably won’t listen to I Am today imma be working and probably won’t be able to focus fully on it
