I’m sure it was ultimately left like that intentionally but I think initially it was probably somewhat of an accident

they probably had the rock version of the song done and then decided to mute most instruments in the mix to hear it more stripped down, since that was the direction of the album. But it’s hard to fully silence something in a mix depending on how things were recorded, so like the guitar and drums could bleed into the vocal track. But then maybe they actually liked that effect and used it in a creative way
