D'angelo post Voodoo gave us Black Messiah which I think is a few levels above Brown Sugar and edged out only slightly by Voodoo

For sure he just dropped it 14 years later

I note the above because I do think there are some (slight) similarities in that space between Blonde/LP5 and Voodoo/BM in that there always seems to be some extraneous factor that's a major contributor to the reluctancy to return straight away. I don't think the creative well has dried up on any of them during the time (BM demos from 2005 for ex) and they probably go about making music as normal just that we don't hear any of it lol.

Since the time I made this thread 3 years ago (even further back to 2018/19) it always felt like we were on the cusp of getting to hear his latest full body of work until something else pops up then its like another 9 months of nothing

    Exactly

the 2018/19/20 singles were the "album" or body of work that he was gradually releasing, he didn't get to release all of them but as he made clear in that little magazine thing that was his thing then, and he's since come back around to making an album

in the 3 years since then Rosalia said she spent a lot time working on music with Frank, Omar Apollo, Noah Goldstein etc. in New York, so he has been working, but he's not in debt to his past work or to public perception so he creates and does what he wants in his own time, be it music or jewellery or the DJ sets, which is the best place to be in

Ya I’m not saying he’s not making music
But clearly at every stage of him being on the cusp or any form of release things have changed

Happened w the Prep singles, happened in 2020 when he supposedly had an album format ready to sell to a label happened again this year w Coachella because clearly something was meant to happen there beyond what happened

Preach these niggas just don’t get it

It’s either Frank is dropping a classic or Frank is boxed in to them

Why does it always need to be an extreme, why can’t Frank just take his time

    I personally don’t mind waiting

he def doing one last victory lap a la Isley Brothers 10 yrs from now. We're going to hear Dj Spinz 808s and a Yo Gotti feature and we're going to hate it but we're also going to love it...

he said during the performance an album was coming but not yet, so not sure what else could've really happened besides dancing around the ice rink

I don't think you mean it in a bad way but I just don't like the implication that there's something wrong with him or that he's not doing the right thing when he's just doing his own thing (music or jewellery or otherwise) on his own time, he's not in debt to having released an album people liked in the past, if he has music ready to release it'll come out, no point worrying about his situation

There's plenty of other great music put out every year, if we don't hear music from him so be it, I still love his perspective and think he's a great person to hear from

The expectation that people have to release albums is odd, understandable but odd
It's not a bad thing in the first place to be a big fan of a musician and want to hear more music from them but getting too invested in other people's personal expression is a bit silly, work on your own version of Frank Ocean music!

HIGHLY DISAGREE. CO was just as highly praised than Blonde & I think CO is better personally, but to each their own

CO was not as praised as Blonde. C’mon.

Not the point. Blonde was called the goat album. Co was always just a great Frank album.

Bro he had a whole BMW lead up talking about the past meets the future that went absolutely nowhere

Not to mention that clearly things deviated heavily from plan pretty obvious from the mess that it was and the way GV responded

I’m not implying there’s anything wrong w him he can do what he wants but there is also a pattern of these generational artists taking long hiatuses due to creative blocks especially after releasing their opuses

Fans wanting artists to release music after 7 years is odd?
I’m not really invested at any level other than being a fan but obviously I’d love to hear new music from him especially after such a long time and almost yearly statements from him hinting that he has stuff ready to go

It’s a weird pedestal to put people on, calling his last album a masterpiece feels insulting when you mention it to bring up how much you think he’s messed up recently or how he’s lost his spark, he’s the same person that released those albums besides having more knowledge and life experiences

when it’s ready to be released it will release, a tease is not a song
