I checked her out because of the hype she was getting on here and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing

Her music is inescapable. I remember hearing RAM the first time in 2013 and thinking "dope, now 80s revival has peaked and we can move on"
Then weekend had to do it, and now 11 years later pop is STILL being dominated with this s***
F***ing move on to the 90s at least goddam

at a certain point we have to accept that its not just a revival or a fad anymore, its a permanent sound that just came up and is associated with that earlier time
I don't think Chappell Roan even sounds like a direct 80s throwback either, I feel like a lot of people just hear the entire dance-pop genre and brand it as 80s throwback unless its like Britney-sounding or something

I agree unfortunately but it's bothersome how much overall space it takes, and how lazy some of the tropes can end up being
I still feel ram is peak 2000s 80s stuff and it was 11 years ago. A new version was even rereleased last year. Starboy was fun too, but I can't name another album like this that was really original and pushed boundaries within the sound

People look at her big singles and look and think it’s all 80s

using a tried-and-true sound with some fresh personality, presentation or other sound sprinkled in feels like the name of the game in pop history tbh. then gradually i guess we can just hope for those small changes to add up and end up changing the sound in a bigger way across decades. some eras bound to end up sounding a lot more homogenized than others
I think Chappell is succeeding mainly through writing that really helps her emotional connection with the audience plus just well-made catchy pop music that still goes through a few moods and styles without being too daring. then add in some virality factor, memorable image, attention to performances, demographic appeal through LGBT and feminist factor and shes a superstar
Drop the takes
Drake dissing Meg and Rihanna in the same time frame did serious damage to his image and started the pivot to the loser s*** he been on in his music as of late.
