What are people's thoughts on this?
Social media I am sure, and the ability to make friends online I would imagine has maybe obscured the word friend for many, but it could also work on the flip-side in that you would think that would lead to more friendships.
Interesting topic that I feel is part of a larger issue.
and apologies if a thread had been made on this in the past
Our idea of what a close friend is has definitely changed too. People are far more proud to say “I don’t have a lot of close friends” as to seem more real or down to earth. There’s been a cultural shift of people just being less earnest in the US in general, so it’s no surprise that people back in 1990 probably were more eager to embrace friendship
Imo

definitely why it may not be the best stat to judge friendship, because everyone has a different definition of it. curious to see the gender breakdown of the numbers.

Not having friends doesn't necessarily mean you are lonely tho
Friendshp is very undervalued In our society
We teach people that everybody is fake and only have 1-2 friends
Thats very much untrue imo and its good to have a lot of friends, just realize there are differing degrees of friendship and not everyone needs ur full trust to be a casual friend and you’ll be fine
decline of social third spaces
real s***
social media/technology/urban design all play big factors in this

in some cases yeah but I think there's a clear correlation here

America’s individualistic society finally hitting its peak + lack of recovery or even an acknowledgment of a life changing pandemic plays a part.
Also symptom of capitalism
