Is the guy in the white family photo the same one who killed himself on the reparations episode?

When Van started going crazy n asking “where’s Lottie” I thought she (Lottie) might’ve been dead. Especially when she was talking about driving, closing her eyes, and ending up in the opposite lane

I thought the exact same, my heart was pounding in that moment.

I can't lie when Van was talking to her friend about everything at the end , for a split second when she mentioned being in her hotel room...I thought that crazy Darius hookup theory was going to become true

the writers were right can does go thru the best progression in the show

the power struggle between candice and van has always been in their on screen relationship

the curse of whiteness in the show has also been a main theme, and vans life spiraling out of control all while trying to play a dangerous game with her proximity to whiteness is scary

her accent faltering during the kitchen scene and inevitable breakdown. candace actually being there for van instead of ditching to pee on a guy.

    her screaming for lottie

i expected more ppl to like it but it speaks to my experience / identity crisis as a lost young black person in paris trying to find their way

also i was so impressed by zazie’s accent and her french! she apparently majored in french in college haha which explains it

I honestly can't really identify one thing I like off top. I wish they did more with the tour and seeing Paperboi with his success in Europe. Maybe show more of Earn finally getting his life together (or not). Hell, do what we wouldn't expect by showing a falloff (when we the audience are expecting to see success).

Instead it went with beating the "white people are evil" trope. There wasn't ANY progression within the characters. I feel like the show tried too hard to be different, but in reality it just ended up being the same as any other black american 'struggle' show.

ngl i dont think the goal was ever to go w the white ppl are evil thing, the character writing was just rlly weak for the anthology episodes. I like some of the anthology episodes a lot but ngl nobody in them feels like a real person, every single character is a caricature. maybe if it was like 20 minute episodes id be cool w it but bro...

i think they genuinely wanted the white ppl to garner some sympathy in those anthology episodes but just s*** the bed when it came to actually executing sympathetic character writing

Definitely like the episode more after letting it soak in more

But that has been the feeling for a lot of episodes this season. These episodes weren't fan service-y and didn't give the audience what they wanted at all, but they all still had great storytelling

I'm not a TV critic so nothing I can say about this ep will be that eloquent or thought-provoking but man, I enjoyed it so much. It was completely unexpected in a delightful way - I watched 3/4 of the ep with my jaw dropped because they kept taking it new places. But I thought it all worked, and meshed together well. They brought it back home nicely - I didn't think Van explaining her headspace at the end felt heavy-handed at all, I think it was just her verbalizing some of her realizations and putting it out there from her perspective. I found value in hearing it from her, even if it was mostly stuff that the audience already knew themselves.

You see just how deep these manic few weeks have taken Van into whatever new life she is so desperately trying to build, it's been a frantic struggle to escape from her reality and build up something completely new and different. It turns out to be completely indefensible, though.

At first it looks like she's built up this nice, sweet life in Paris and it gradually just gets more and more ridiculous to the point where it can't just be written off as her being her own person. She's planting meth, beating people with bread, serving human hands to rich weirdos. It was all just a touch exaggerated above reality and that's where this show thrives. She's gone too far and her friend is finally there to ground her and bring her back to reality. I loved when Candace is getting plates thrown at her and the door is RIGHT THERE and she moves towards it a little but doesn't leave the room or run away. She stays there and helps bring her friend back down and you see Van come crashing back down to reality.

Also just a lot of ridiculous, hilarious moments like Skarsgard doing the fake bashful 'ohhhh I just have these crazy thoughts haha we shouldn't get naked... or should we?' and the hands served up in the same way that rare bird is (highlighting the weirdness of reality while taking it into their own exaggerated space). The pee going for two minutes at the end tying it all together with Earn's bag

Idk just random thoughts but I loved that ep. Zazie crushed it

They've played with exaggerated timescales a few times this season and I thought it's worked well. It basically seemed like Darius came back the next day to the Nigerian food place and it had somehow gone out of business in a flash and that woman had already opened up its Naija Bowl replacement.

Then in this ep Van has somehow found a way to establish this entirely new life with multiple lovers, a hand-serving procurement and chef position, cover of a magazine, fully furnished and decorated apartment, etc. It felt so dramatic and over-the-top, I think in part because she was completely desperate to escape from her old life and establish a new identity for herself.

Any other examples where stuff played out in an unrealistic timespan?

it is that level of quality

every episode is at least an 8 with quite a few near perfect ones
