i was studying abroad in paris at the time and it deeply spoke to me about alienation and all the things i was running away from so deeply
it’s a really sad story about van trying to run away from her self, from motherhood, from an identity branded onto her in america as a black woman… it’s such a beautiful beautiful episode i’m actually tearing up thinking about it
You get it
That show has a few of those. The goof who sat by the door could bring me to tears real s***

i get that, that one was really ambitious and well done
trying to work w a rapper in Atlanta rn and literally feeling like Earn running after Paper Boi omfg it's like actually not even that funny when the clichés are too real
down w flu and fever sweats and all of it rn so it was finally time to start a binge.
this rewatch is hitting so hard already. this was already one of my fav shows but rewatching today there's so many scary accurate details I didn't even appreciate before. the messiness of the relationship, the constant anxiety from living precariously.. how hard it is to even know what's authentic in the music bizz, and just how fkn scary inhumane the US is. absolute masterpiece of a show
lmfao in S3 when Al does the press conference for free swag and the director of the brand opens the speech w "I'm the least prejudiced person in this room. In the world even" 😭🤣
are they similar
Donglover once called this series "Twin Peaks for rappers" and I kinda feel it - they both have this certain calm energy to it, they both are a comeback after an instant classic first 2 seasons with a third one which completely explodes the scope of the original w a rly ambitious narrative and a lot of unexpected experimental episodes which don't even seem to have to do w the overall narrative but are actually thematically deepening the whole
they're also v different in many ways ofc but both peak tv
are they similar
No, not really. Atlanta can be "surreal" at many times but they're very different beasts. Don't go in expecting twin peaks, you'll like it more
Closer to Seinfeld imo

The Twin Peaks comparisons are very valid imo
finished my rewatch like two weeks ago, I think this was the first time actually rewatching S4 - it was always my least fav season and maybe still is, but not by far anymore.
it's def a beautiful ending to the show, it's good they brought it back to ATL but w the characters feeling different and now rly having to work through the issues that were more bubbling under the surface in S3, particularly Van.
there's still a ton of lowkey classic comedy in this I forgot about a bit, from Darius trying to return an airfryer during a looting to Al signing Yodel Kid and that entire Goofie Movie episode lol. I dunno if I'm a fan of the therapy scenes tbh? but among the more dramatic stuff the camping episode w Earn, Van and Lottie is such a beautiful conclusion to their arc. also still love that it ends with a Darius episode.
I LOVE this series.
there's such an uncanny realism to its soft surrealism. moments like Alexander Skarsgaard being mad about a scandal Van caused and saying "this might cost me the Baby Shark movie!!" rly made me crack up on this rewatch, there's probably no other series that quite nailed how to integrate pop culture references like they did here
the cinematography is consistently gorgeous, the needle drops and sound editing is super inspired, the acting is brilliant across the board, the comedy is both biting w social commentary (especially resonant if you've ever worked in the music biz) but also has a serious undercurrent, I admire how complex the characters are, they're rarely ever completely likable but you still root for them and you get to see them grow up and mature in teal time and go through some really emotionally difficult situations that are easy to relate to and actually made me tear up a couple times throughout.. real cinema.

The therapy scene where Earn tells the story about the suit is one of the best scenes in the entire show
Revealed so much about Earn’s motive throughout the show, great great writing fr

Feel like they dropped a major bombshell in the therapy scenes that never got touched before or since but that's to be expected from Atlanta. Overall I'm glad they're in the show and we were finally able to find out what happened at Princeton
Season 4 is great. 2 my favorite, season 4 probably has that second spot over 1. Finale was amazing, perfect way to wrap up this show imo
Watching Vince Staples Show Season 2 made me appreciate this show even more. Witty references to memes/pop culture, surrealism that doesn't feel corny, characters the viewer actually cares about and most importantly - actual laugh out loud "hold up, let me rewind that
" moments
People call Atlanta the Boondocks a lot, but I deadass see it having a similar stature in culture 15 years from now
