Holy s*** this opening scene reminds me of work

There's a few "traditions" in NL (christmas school plays and the like I think) and Germany (carnival) that use black face. There's still people in Germany who defend that as free expression and just acceptable stupid carnival fun and from what I've heard in NL it's even worse how ppl will get straight up upset that their "historic" traditions (actually only like 100 years old lol) are labelled "politically incorrect" today.... Dutch friends told me just this winter that there's actually protests pro-Zwarte Piet still.

Ppl at a rap concert being in black face is definitely not something that would actually happen... Definitely very over-the-top/ doing the Dutch dirty a bit maybe (sry for pun), but in context of this show being surreal and over-the-top a lot def a clever way to highlight racism in Europe. It is much more insidious but not much better than in the US tbh, in some ways worse because Europeans will consider themselves progressive with no actual inclination to look at themselves critically.

So while blackface like that would not happen, it's kind of a good visualization of how tone deaf and oblivious white Europeans can be in regards to racism

Btw Paper Boi performing at Paradiso in Amsterdam is pretty hard, from all I heard really amazing venue. Hoping to still get tix for either Thundercat or Mdou Moctar (both playing there same night) when I'm in NL in about a week

I like the character more when he has his own episode because otherwise he's just this awkward side character who spouts quirky internet facts or conspiracies

the small talk scene was cringe, thought he had a deeper relationship with Van than that. then it seemed a bit too on the nose for his reaction to a weird euthanasia experience be to say the body is 2Pac because there's an internet conspiracy he's still alive

would rather see the wise Darius than the meme Darius
