Also besides having choices storytelling through vision and gameplay cues is important too! Kinda like majoras mask, valve games and metroid games do, where Just exploring and doing extras give you a better idea of the story, world and lore

exactly! i feel like alot of games are just telling story with cutscenes or dialogue these days, which can be great (last of us, red dead redmeption), but i feel like those arent techincally taking full advantage of the video game medium sadly.

silent hill 2 was a great mix of both types of storytelling

Visage is great with subtle storytelling too

the PT demo was great too

sadly not too many games like these tho imo

Silent hill the greatest horror series man, i hate horror movies cause they never got a reaction out of me, but silent hill and the first 2 resident evil games made me s*** my pants, thanks to being so interactive being games. If resident evil 2 and silent hill 2 were movies it wouldnt have worked, but as games they're amazing

You must have ADD. Cause when it’s done right, you WANT to sit thru those cutscenes, and it’s more immersive than movies. TLOU, Uncharted, BioShock, Mass Effect, Horizon Zero Dawn, (Which is personally one of my favorite story twists ever of any media.) etc., the examples are endless.

Kingdom Hearts 3 and the build up to it’s ending, made me cry like a baby in a way that no movie or show ever has.

Can they do more, especially now wit the new gen? Sure. But they’re currently doing ENOUGH if you’re actually paying attention.

That's cool and all but id feel the same watching a movie. Im not dentying these stories arent good, a lot of them are amazing, but they'd be as good as if they were movies. What do these stories have that they had to be implemented in games instead of a movie? Most of the games you've mentioned have a disconnect between what you do playing and what you see in cutscenes

“What do these stories have that they had to be implemented in games instead of a movie?”

The interactive gameplay in between scenes while movies are jus a static scene that you sit and watch.

But nothing you do playing impacts the story. In tlou2 you can kill ellie as abby and you get a game over, even tho the objective of the main character is just that.
And that's just the first example i had, in gta and red dead you have even more cases where you fail missions if you even try to stray off the given path for a couple meters

Yes, but even if it’s linear, it still offers an interactive experience that absolutely no movie can. Movies are 100% linear no matter which way you split it, so I’m not sure what kind of comparison that directly is.

Put it like this. There’s movies I like, even love. Same goes for shows. But there’s nothing that’s ever had me as completely ENGROSSED and obsessed like games have. And I feel like that comes solely from the actual firsthand interaction wit all of it.

i agree on both sides tbh

RDR2 best story ive experienced ever, bc it was also a game and arthur was who i made him (good guy or bad guy depending on the s*** i did)

but i feel like if there was even more choice it would be even more dope, if it felt like i could impact the story in a big way, thats what Stardust is basically talking about here i think

like if the player wasnt just interacting and watching it unfold, but actually actively was changing the story based on how they play yk?

Tru, which games have made their attempts at. Mass Effect, Dishonored, etc. have 3+ different endings, all based on your choices. And I feel like that’s only gonna expand as the years go on and games can hold more and more data.

Doesn’t Cyberpunk (As broken as it currently is.) have like 10 different endings? Games are starting to approach that kinda territory.

I agree with what you're saying but i disagree considering the games we're mentioning. Interactivity is key but when your input has no saying in how the story goes its no different than watching a movie without having a say in what happens. The difference is the games let you reach the points where story progresses while movies dont. When i play these linear story heavy games i feel like im just the puppeteer moving the character from point A to point B. I for example hated the moments in tomb raider and uncharted where you have to climb walls which sure can be cinematic but you're just moving the left stick. Im not the player controlling the story, i am a plot device. If instead of moving lara or nathan i watched a sequence of them moving nothing would be lost. The best parts of these games are some gameplay aspects that have no meaning in the grand scheme of things. Uncharted combat system is dope but in cutscenes nobody dies so it makes what i played feel like it was done in another dimension. Like nathan should be a psychopath based on what you do but in the overall story he's far from that

yeah, i think if someone like rockstar fully went into this (they partially did in gta 5 and rdr2) they could create something really special with gta 6 tbh

Yeah, that's a good start! Obviously its gonna take a while since writing scripts for every variable in your actions in game is a long process with today's assets but i hope in the future majority of story based games can add multiple endings, multiple choices and in general give you complete freedom on where you want your story to go

It’s definitely been pulled off correctly tho in certain cases.

In Mass Effect 1, I got Wrex killed, who was my favorite character, so I was gutted when he was still dead in Mass Effect 2.

So much so, that when I beat the trilogy, I did it all over again, and made sure Wrex survived til the end of 3.

I love when games give you the opportunity to kill characters, sometimes when you do it gives you a game over, like at that point why not make them invincible?

What you’re asking for is a lot. It’s something like what I think Cyberpunk was more or less aiming for and they had to cut a lot of what they wanted to do because of how much that is.

It’s a lot easier to make an already characterized preset character that you can just give decisions that effect the story ending rather than an almost blank can push where your decisions effect and form the personality of that character along with the actual story and all in game without cut scenes.

Thats why i said that i hope it hapoens in the future, i know its too much work with today's technology but i want for it to be the norm in 10 years. Also, besides the point of having choices in stories, i also talked about games using gameplay and the game world to tell a story, which to me is something achievable yet many developers dont even try doing it. A lot of games have great stories told with little to no dialogue, instead some give you 10 minute cutscenes for every 30 minutes of gameplay

you explained perfectly why BOTW is a top tier game that still is unparalleled.

we need more games that promote total player freedom. have you played new vegas @op ??

since u playing yakuza i’m assuming you got playstation. you can play it on ps now. it’s worth checking out with a free trial if u haven’t used it already.

Am I old or have yall not played Half Life or Metroid Prime, or Majoras Mask, Ocarina of Time... ?

yes, but notice how most of those are pre 2010 and majority are nintendo games.

2010s is rise of ubisoft open world type games and i feel like that’s what ruined everything. it’s the easiest way to convince players they have freedom when it’s just a glorified hub world of copy and paste levels
