Anyways, also the white flight happened in Gary when these industrial jobs disappeared and also the town appointed its first black mayor. This took with it many industrial jobs and people that supported the area, crippling the (predominantly (84%)) black community that remained.

Yeah bro, stopped there when I visited Chicago on my way to the Jackson’s Family House. I stopped by a soul food joint called Brickhouse (not sure if it’s still around). Some of the most depressing food I’ve ever tried to eat.
So many abandoned buildings, businesses, gas stations and homes during my drive down to Gary. A damn near ghost town
