I’m all for rappers trying new s*** but jesus, is there no passion for rapping anymore? Anytime someone says this, it just gives off this vibe that these artists think singing is a higher caliber art than rapping is. I’m sick of it.

Traditional rap is dead unfortunately. You need melodies and trendy flows to make it. JID just dropped a 9/10 rap album and nobody cares. Cole and Kendrick are the last of them in the mainstream.

I appreciate the ones who are keeping “traditional rap” alive and well even if it isn’t the dominant rap subgenre anymore. I think if all of rap sounded like rap caviar, I’d probably stop listening to the majority of newer rap music. I’m really not moved by generic 808s and trap beats anymore.

Even though JID is a fairly new artist, he’s in his early 30’s. He comes from a generation that still was grounded in the real world and all its complexities. I’m afraid unless we get a movement of new rappers in their 30’s, that sort of hip hop is dead

I mean it all depends on perspective. Is rap stale from a mainstream place? Yeah absolutely. But in terms of hip hop albums this year, there’s been a lot of great diverse talent. Saba, Denzel, Vince, Kendrick, Joey, JID etc.

These days you just have to look a little deeper.
