To be fair I've only read If Beale Street Could Talk by Baldwin, and it was very great. I haven't read any Atwood but I've ready Vonnegut and while he's incredible and probably a better artist than King I don't think it's crazy company for him to be keeping.
But I agree it's not that big of a deal. King is just way better than most writers and his best books have a depth that I think is really under appreciated. This is coming from someone who grew up assuming he was a hack but once I started reading him I realized how great he was.
