I think there is a clear quality control issue with the level of output Alchemist has been churning out lately. I agree that up until ALC Records really took off every single drop felt meticulously tended to and pristine, even if the music itself wasn’t good, which ironically made everything that came out good regardless. And a big chunk of this is the mixing lately I agree.

Griselda Express was like a scrapped version of Thowy’s Revenge

Every time Alc ventures into I don’t wanna say trap but more modern production like Slow Roll and Big Dog it sounds f***ing awful and I wish he would not force that. Like seriously when Big Dog dropped I was like what a waste of studio time and talent

TMVTL was the highlight and even that was annoying because the drums on that were HORRIBLY engineered. That 2nd beat could’ve been a 15/10 classic Alc beat but it’s only an 8/10 because of how the drums were programmed

I can't cosign your critique on Slow Roll. Boldy kills that s*** and its sinister enough. Maybe the hi-hats are trap tier

I have a lowkey beef with Price of Tea in general because it’s a little too vacant and lifeless for me. It was not what I wanted from a full length after his output in 2018. I understand it’s supposed to sound like that but it just wasn’t for me

Bo Jackson is incredible though and a top 5 in Alc discography

Price of Tea was my introduction to Boldy, so I have a bias.

Carruth, Scrape the Bowl, Grey October, Speed Demon Freestyle. Perfect songs to me, though I understand it only covers about half of the album.

    Bo Jack was so good

Carruth was a crazy intro, I’ll give it that

Also it gave us the subtle fart bar from Benny “as soon as the pack landed I let a couple go”

I hope we get another Benny album with Alc because their collabs in general really do have a distinctly good chemistry and character that WSG+Conway don’t tap into

Album not bad but yeah very under the bar. I really enjoyed Burden of proof, but almost all hit boy beats are very weak. The al range from good to just might. And benny hooks are just silly all over this

  • Jan 26, 2024

ima keep it real -- i deleted the album. i couldn't connect with any of the songs. Benny and Conway songs usually don't grow on me, if it doesn't hit, it doesn't. WSG has a habit of growing on me quite a bit though

I feel like that “trap” style only worked well for him on Willie Lloyd

I don’t know who to blame tho because even if Eddie Sancho is the one f***ing up the mix it still gets sent back to Al and he’s giving it the green light

And yeah TMVTL got me heated. That would’ve easily been a 10/10 track but for some reason it’s got the worst mix of any track on the whole album

    Definitely not the worst mix

The mixing on How To Rap is jaw droppingly awful

Even though it’s one of his most acclaimed, Alfredo is the first release of his where I noticed this recent awful mixing

It’s gotten better, and gotten worse over the years since then. I actually think the mixing on the Alc beats here is better than much of his output since. Yeah the second beat on TMVTL is not great sounding but at least everything isn’t compressed to death like on TT4

How does bad mixing get greenlit on studio albums

many many many ears have to hear the songs before they're sent to the labels I don't understand

I literally don’t understand because the same exact engineering team recently did Nas’s Magic 3 and Big Hit’s album, and like them or not they sound immaculate mixing wise

So how do these Hit-Boy beats sound so flat and s***ty? I even have to question Hit’s role in this, like can he not notice how terrible they sound compared to his other work? He’s one of the people that has to green light the mixes

Aight this my last rant about engineering

I really don’t think a lot of artists understand mixing or sonics or any of that technical s***

It usually just comes down to “Does the beat hit through big speakers and does my voice sound good? Ok cool we’re done here”
