Growing Up

  • Hey guys,

I’ve been on KTT for 7 years now and I couldn’t help but notice things have changed. I don’t really go to the music section too much anymore. I used to like rap but now it’s kind of faded out along with the other genres I liked. I haven’t listened to an album in years.

I got bored of video games and politics have gotten to be ridiculous. Whenever I talk about my interests, I usually talk in the past tense because I don’t really have any anymore.

And I’m kind of okay with it.

Does anybody else feel like they’ve been going through this as they’ve gotten older? Or am I just depressed?

I’m only 23 but I’ve felt like that. It’s like I’m dead but then I eventually either find new interests or I go back to things I used to like but now I like something different about it

I’ve lost interest in literally everything except music, and even that’s slightly starting to fade away. I like a lot of current artists but the music overall today just doesn’t hit the same as it did in middle school-high school. Obviously there’s some nostalgia bias but there will never a rap era like it was from 2011-16 on god.

I used to be a huge basketball fan, both NBA and college but interest has decreased slowly since 2017. Now I can barely watch a game without getting bored. I’m starting to get there with football as well although I can still watch entire games.

Was never much of a gamer to begin with, but I def miss the early PS4 era in 2014-15. Especially nba 2k14 park.

I had a wrestling phase at one point but grew out of it when it became really gay to watch. CM Punk was the gawd back then, wish I could experience those promos in live time again.

I’m 23 and have no other interests and talents and it sucks lol.. and I was also a loner and experienced major depression for a lot of years so even when my interests were good, I didn’t appreciate them enough. Now everything is mid and I hate it lol

So you think your loss of interest might have something to do with your depression?

Could be part of it. I would say being obsessed with the past and not making peace with stuff that occurred in my life might be the biggest contributors. from high school-age 21, my depression was a 9. now it’s like a 6, not counting the bad days, so I’ve worked on that at least. def don’t wanna be a stuck in high school ass nigga so I gotta get past that

it also doesn’t help that I have flashbacks to random ass days in like 2014 and 2015 and i be remembering every detail of it too. It really doesn’t feel like it’s 2020. it feels like time goes faster and faster as we get older but I have to remind myself that we’re all experiencing the same day so I have to get that out of my head

Doesn't have to be depression if you're ok with it and can still function just fine. Losing interests as you grow older is normal. Sometimes it can take a while to find new things you're interested in.

Went through this in 2016/2017, felt like nothing mattered and I didn't enjoy anything. Went to therapy at my campus, she said the way I described it was like a checklist for symptoms of depression. Kinda still have that feeling, watching series/playing video games just feel like a waste of time and I still don't keep up with music like I used to (it's hard if you don't have a streaming service and don't know where to get music).

I appreciate movies more now, like I pay attention to the cinematography and plot elements in ways I never used to. Also want to read, play piano, gym more and focus on my studies. So it might just be me changing and wanting to be more productive with my time.

I'm starting to realize that video games are really pointless, like I've spent literally 1000s of hours playing Xbox 360 games and I can't tell you what happened in AC Revelations, Deus Ex, Gears of War etc and the same thing will happen in a few years with the PS4 games I'm playing rn. I've cut it down to only a few hours at night but I feel like that time could be spent better

Video games are still fun but I definitely play them a lot less. Absolutely no interest in politics but it’s been that way since Obama’s second term. Rap music I just listen to what’s hot. It’s not even worth arguing about in music sect. because most users are stuck in their niche but every so often certain users will surprise me with new music.

I’m trying to figure out how to have more time for the things I enjoy

A part of me understands why older people feel so alienated in society because after a certain point you really do just pay attention to the things you care about.

I don’t mind watching movies but like you said I’m paying attention to the cinematography and similar things.

That’s how I feel. Everything in media seems like manufactured nonsense.

I just want to get back to working out and doing what feels real.
