Yeah I was kinda the same, wasn't feeling it at launch feature & mission wise after coming from San Andreas at first. But it was a new start similar to GTA 3 so they had to begin somewhere.
Realized how great it was after GTA 5, which I wasn't a fan of at all. GTA 4 had a good gritty story, atmosphere, and antagonists unlike GTA 5.
Second paragraph is exactly what I'm saying It feels like people prop up GTA 4 now because of GTA 5 rather than because of GTA 4 itself
And I'll have to replay it at some point, but I suspect the "mature, darker story" is because of the colors, tone and mood of the game. GTA 5 had you torturing somebody, Trevor bashes a guy's head in the first time we see him, you have the option of killing one of the playable characters at the end. All GTA plots since 3 have this element of betrayal/revenge and have you doing some f***ed up stuff in the missions, but 4 gets all the praise like it did something different in it's story

Not hating I'm just saying what I suspect the reasons are for this game being praised so much now when it wasn't 10 years ago
finally getting the infernus and flashing lights comes on the radio was such a euphoric feeling
this game still holds up I would be ok if they never went back to liberty city.
I been saying 4 > 5 since 2013 don't play with me man!!
Were you on forums back then? Because I know you'd have been in the minority saying s*** like this
How does it hold up? I’ve been wanting to replay for a couple years now but I’m worried that it’ll play like s***
Maybe it's just nostalgia but I think it holds up pretty well. It can be a little janky at times but the gameplay and story are fine. Its still better than GTA 5 imo & I've played through that like 4 times
Special game for me and without a doubt my favorite GTA game. Everything was on point from the story, tone, setting, gunplay, etc.
The closest thing to a “movie game” ever released
The story is just incredible with the depth and moving parts
Maybe it’s not the best GTA but it’s by far the best game.
Classic game. One of the greatest games of all time. Whippin around liberty city blasting flashing lights>>> i need a remake
Man I used to hop in the range cruising with flashing lights playing. Good times
seeing this madee want to go back and try to 100% it, wktt rlly just sounds like the modern news today💀💀
never beat the story on this, my ps3 died before i had the chance
but the multiplayer was so f***ing fun, way better than s***ty ass gta online
interactions were so organic, from getting into blood wars with some random at the airport and yall just going all over the map with murder beef
i got so many memories of going and back and forth with people on that online
when the whole server would team up to take out the d*** head that kept spamming rockets and blowing everyone up you just don't get organic gaming experiences like that nowadays man
i fasho used to take s*** personally online lmaoo
such a goated game
The only memorable thing was the bank robbery mission
Eh gameplay-wise it took a nosedive after that mission but the dialogues and characters were top notch, the writing only got better.
I could see a TV series adaptation doing more justice to the main story tbh.
