Well I think that music evolves over time, and as that happens it leaves behind people who don't take the time to stay updated.

There may be higher rates of ignorance now of days due to the fact that the production of music has evolved and morphed in the digital age, and continues to become more complex as technology advances.

For example I believe the prevalence of the usage of Artificial Intelligence, and the emergence of blockchain based digital formats will become more predominant in the upcoming years.

I think the complexity within that subject matter will most likely go over the heads of the average music listener.
