Slice of life drama elements?

We need more of those, they been missing. Especially when it come to black films today.

Yeah we don't have much black hangout films where we can just live with the characters, smh

It’s tragic honestly. I just feel like the types of black movies we got in the 90s and early 00s just wouldn’t get funded today. gotta shake things up bro

Which movies?
I'd argue they would since hollywood is looking to be more "progressive" and include more non-white voices

I'm assuming you mean movies like Juice?
Juice wouldn't need to be made by a big studio, a small indie company like A24 or Annapurna would gladly produce films like those.
Charm city kings is like a new age juice (not as good) and HBO funded that, even tho it got dropped from the app recently lol
What's the name of this show/ movie where Black characters move through time? Sorry for vague description. Saw folks mention it on tumblr a while back

S*** like ATL, Barbershop, The Wood, and Soul Food.

Lovecraft country?
S*** like ATL, Barbershop, The Wood, and Soul Food.
I think those can still get made today, more so from indie companies.
Can't really think of any similar films to soul food off the top of my head but Waves seems the closest? Being it's based around black family drama.
Barbershop 3 came out in 2016, fairly recently.
I can't think of any "young niggas hanging out" type movies like ATL and The wood besides Charm city king that I already mentioned.
I don't think the problem is "would these films get funded" it's more so not having enough black filmmakers in the game. Cus if Jordan Peele and Boots Riley are busy doing sci-fi surreal type films, and Barry Jenkins is doing heartbreaking type films, who do we really have that WANTS to create the hang out type films?
Came itt to say Love & Basketball. Just rewatched today
I still gotta pick up that criterion collection of that movie.

So true. I don’t doubt there are hundreds of scripts passed around the industry yearly that fit the type films we are talking about but the question becomes why are they getting passed on.

I will say big studios will say Yes to trauma p*** before anything. That's why s*** like Till and Harriet will easily get made.
