Yeah man, Usain Bolt won the gold medal because he knew the Olympic chairman and Einstein figured out general relativity because he was big friends with God.

What you’re saying mostly applies to the corporate world and even then if you really want to reach the top you will still have to be talented.

Speaking from the corporate world, but it applies everywhere.

I know a lot of talented hoopers and musicians who never had a chance at the big leagues because they weren't related or connected to someone already in the industry.

Think of all the talented musicians performing on corners - Victory is a great example - she didn't make it until one of Jay-Z's people introduced her to him.

I think 10% talent and 90% hard work. Obviously you have to have some interest and enjoyment from the activity to be able to commit to the hard work. MichaelAngelo would rework his drawings like 30 times and got his assistants to burn the majority of his work after he died and said « if they knew how hard I worked they wouldn’t think of me as much of a genius. » also one of my favourite picasso quotes is « inspiration will find you but it has to find you working »

Idk it's producers for instance who will make better beats in their first 6 months of producing than some make in their entire career

Ion practice basketball but when I play I shoot at a high percentage

    That's talent

  • Apr 10, 2024

    Better example, math

It's some people who breeze thru calculus, while others repeatedly fail Calc 1 despite studying more

  • Apr 10, 2024

Sometimes you can be so talented there’s no need for hard work. Hard work gets respect but talent get worshipped. Like it’s still people out here believing in Ben Simmons and he’ll never have an extended time without a team

Age-old debate but which one you got if you had to pick one. Some examples:

    Talent:
Usain Bolt was an athletic freak of nature. Dude ate 100 chicken nuggets a day while at the Beijing Olympics where he set multiple world records

    Hard Work:
Tom Brady was picked 199th in the draft. His draft report said he didn’t have a strong arm. But his work ethic and preparation turned him into the GOAT.

    Talent:
Mozart is often cited as a prodigy in music. His innate talent for composition and performance from a very young age is legendary.

    Hard Work:
Vincent van Gogh is renowned for his painting but sold only a few paintings in his lifetime. His success is attributed to his intense dedication and the vast amount of work he produced.

    Talent:
Albert Einstein’s ability to conceptualize complex physical phenomena changed the course of physics. His talent for abstract thinking was unparalleled.

    Hard Work:
Thomas Edison famously said he found 10,000 ways that did not work before creating the lightbulb. His persistence was insane.

Obviously, these guys all had some combination of both. But which one do you think is most important to succeed in life?

I would rather pick talent bc you can't increase talent/aptitude

hard work is more important for the average joe

but having a talent at something just makes your work stand out

you can work hard at being a medical doctor for example, make a good income, and yet still be eclipsed by people who have a natural talent for the aspects of it that you don't like making people feel comfortable and being a trustworthy human, that stuff will give you an edge on the competition even if they work hard to get to a similar skill level

harsh truth but working hard at the s*** you aren't naturally talented at will usually not get you to win at the elite level bc the elite level is full of Talented people who also work hard

doesn't make it less valuable, but its important to focus on what you're good at

  • AR15

Im not very talented so i gotta rely on hard work

I gotta work twice as hard to get s*** other ppl dont even have to work for sometimes but it is what it is.

what if you just haven't discovered your true talent?

that's a different discussion altogether though

Do you think Usain Bolt, the fastest man's alive, is in that 99% he was talking about?

You basically proved him right lol

Hard work means nothing in society anymore and it f***ing sucks. I’ve been working harder than anyone I know my whole life and I’m still at the bottom. Hard work is not rewarded at least not often enough to make a big difference. Most people that make it life in this generation were given the red carpet treatment by their parents who probably did work hard. Working hard stopped making a difference ever since social media blew up.

I think you’re looking at it from an unsuccessful lens instead of just a general conversation. There’s plenty of talented people aren’t successful, that’s not the conversation tho.

The right work the right way in front of the right people >>>> working hard or possessing talent

  • Apr 10, 2024

Hard work means nothing. Don’t be like me and work hard just to never make it in life.

Sometimes it's neither. The thing that could be holding you back is bc you are not a son of a higher up or best friend with an influential figure in the industry. Having connections can be the big differentiator

This is the real truth. Malcom gladwel did a study on predictors of success with people with genius iqs and other iq groups and they found the correlation to iq and success is nothing compared to it with money.
