Anyone whose played a fighting game from the 00’s (Marvel, SF3 and 4, Smash Melee) or shooters (Halo, Quake) knows what I’m talking about.
The lack of technical nuance in combination with the spread of information on social media has made competitive games a chore if anything.
There’s no real excitement. Everybody figures out the game in a few months and then a new season starts and it’s just rinse and repeat.
Am I the only one feels this way?

idk what u mean by hardcore cause halo wasn't hardcore
but competitive FPS is dying bc every dev is riding BR trend and BRs have too much RNG for good competitive. Project A will change this

Project A? Will have to check it. What’s your take on what makes something “hardcore”?
I was specifically thinking of Halo 2 where there was BXB, BXR and all of that stuff.
I know Battlefield isn’t that competitive but even that’s been watered down. It’s like all of my favorite games have had the soul sucked out of it.

hardcore for shooters is like low time-to-kill, not arcade-ey. like counterstrike or tarkov

I see. I was using “hardcore” to describe games with steeper learning curves than the games we have now.

Melee Genesis Top 8 had 103k watching on Twitch
Ultimate Genesis top 8 had 90+k
Not of it is dying

There hasn’t been any excitement in e-sports since call of duty 4... after that each game got easier and those pros aren’t even that good except for my one of my old doubles partners who is still crushing it. He’s the only one I respect
I can’t speak for MOBA’s. You might be right.
Counterstrike is old. Apparently you guys haven’t picked up on the whole modern vs 00’s comparison.
What level of competition are you speaking of lol
There's a lot of esports games, and depending on how good you are at x game will be the level of competition that you're dealing with. So first and foremost are you at a very high level in w/e games you're playing or speaking of
Assuming it has a ranked mode
You listed some fighting games as though fighting are less compettive, but if you watch any FGC tournaments, the same niggas that was playing SF2 or Tekken 2 is still out here grinding and killing s*** on SFV or Tekken 7, etc
idk what u mean by hardcore cause halo wasn't hardcore

What is BR AND RNG?
Super Smash Bros Ultimate out now
Ultimate as a competitive game? You joking. That's not competitive by any means, and melee is the only game that counts with how they tech is used
Melee Genesis Top 8 had 103k watching on Twitch
Ultimate Genesis top 8 had 90+k
Not of it is dying
Uh huh, ultimate being new so it had 90k,
Melee had 300k people watching at evo 2018
Stupid ass using recency bias to further your mindset
Dumb f***

I think he means how the game itself allowed insane levels of tech and deep depth for the gamer to shine through the mechanics rather than have the game play the gamer.
Watch sfv and understand there's a 3 frame limit for combos so it's easy to do combos.
Compare that to sf4 where there were 1 frame links, loops, unique combo situations on characters and sfv looks like dog s***. Gamers are getting their bread, but can't tell me they're happy with this s***.
Tekken 7 is the only competitive fighting game available right now that has stupid depth, but the ceiling is insanely high and Leroy breaks the game
MOBAs and BR are the future of esports. League-format FPS games are a toss up, could see them reaching that level or becoming niche but alive like the fighting scene is now. Arena shooters are dead.

Ah yeah in those regards I know SFV is dulled compared to previous entries. Tho there's a lot of fighting games out there, so it's not really fair to there's only Tekken 7. I think I've seen UNIST get a lot of praise, Guilty Gear always seems to keep their fanbase happy. I think people really like Samurai Showdowns mechanics too.
Obviously there's ones with flaws or just stuff people aren't happy with like SFV, DBFZ, MK. I mean it seems about 50/50 tho in ones doing s*** right vs ones lacking, which is about the best you can hope for with so many different creations in reality.
Smash community seems to really enjoy Ultimate as well.

I didn't want to include guilty gear and the anime fighters because they are not in the mainstream eyes but are definitely competitive
As for the smash community, they'll suck on Sakurai,s d*** for anything. Ultimate has the right tempo and speed for newcomers but to say it has froth is a joke when melee got enough insane layers underneath to deepen the character. All it got is....knowing when to dodge and fake out an opponent by playing dishonest.
Rainbow Six: Siege is my favorite esports to watch and it’s pretty hardcore FPS with Moba elements.

Least if fighting games are your thing you got your options to find what you're looking y'know
Aside from them I mean, shooters been trash this gen imo. Overwatch is competitive I guess, but it's not for me really. Siege a pretty deep game. Battle Royales can be hard I guess, I mean I can't do that fortnite building s*** well at all
Rocket League definitely has a high ceiling of play, but it's basically the only game that's came out that is like it's own unique thing.
MOBAs been doing they thing, I guess strategy games like Starcraft have fell off, I don't really think there's been a new one that's popping
Sports games always been about cheesing
I feel like outside of shooters, there's competitive games out there if you wanna find them. It's just gotten popping in different genres like MOBAs compared to what was popping say 10 years ago

I'm not debating that
It isn't competitive anymore but the games that were competitive had watered down considerably and now other venues have taken hold of the mainstream and took off soaring. I enjoy fighting games and maybe some competitive shooters but it doesn't have the same feel and feedback of shooters of yesteryears.
Rocket league is its own thing and has stupid depth in regards to physics but it paved its own lane
1. League of Legends
2. Smash Bros Ultimate/Melee
3. Rocket League
4. Counter-Strike: GO
5. Hearthstone
Fortnite, MW and Overwatch don't really count
Halo 4 and 5 were trash for true competitive play, Halo 2 and 3 were literally top tier for ranked play and for eSports tournaments
ever since this + battle royale happened we've been limited: venturebeat.com/2016/01/04/activision-blizzard-buys-mlg-for-estimated-46m-to-build-espn-of-esports
