Not many from the new generation seem very competitive tbh. The ones with potential are either lazy, dying or heavily d***ged up, it’s gonna look real shaky once Drake, Cole and Kendrick step back.

Kendrick but they came up together so its not really the same.

Chance until he self imploded. But he 100% had the potential.

Travis scott but i dont think he'll ever get there.

I truly think whoever takes the crown from Drake is not in the public eye yet. It'll be someone in the next 3 or 4 years that will emerge

XXX had him shook. the fact that he responded at all, even in a petty social media way, shows that he was watching what he was doing

An interesting what-if to think about is what if Kendrick had dropped a more commercially accessible album instead of TPAB. If Kendrick had followed up GKMC with another chart-topper full of hits then I think it really becomes a 1A and 1B as far as popularity and cultural relevance instead of Drake dominating both.

Also might’ve lead to an actual beef. The cold war between the two of them pretty much stopped after TBAP as they were both doing two completely different things

  • Dec 30, 2020

most rappers fumble these days before they actually get a chance to take out drake

it would have to be another of nowhere meteoric rise like a drake, a 50, a chance or something like they.

they also need to have the right timing for the culture which is something you cant really plan until its about to happen

Bad Bunny if he decided not to retire. He could stump Drake’s growth in Latin America (which Drake has his eyes on). I think Stormzy has potential after headlining Glastonbury in 2019. His 2020 world tour was insanely impressive (but COVID settled that down).

Honestly, right now, Drake doesn’t have anybody to worry about. Well, other than Travis. If Travis sells 500k+ first week with Utopia, then we have a problem haha He has industry support, pop appeal, old guard respect, ridiculous product deals and youth on his side.

Kendrick would also have had to drop more frequently. This 3-4 year album space doesn’t cut it next to Drake’s 12-month output work ethic.

    CHANCE?

    lmao your so lost

You obviously don’t remember the hype of him back in 2016. I never said he’d be as big as drake, but to act like he wasn’t the one who could’ve been the next big rap superstar if he followed that trajectory would be disingenuous

Y'all need to stop saying this.

Kendrick has never been a rival to Drake commercially, which is really the only metric when it comes to measuring mainstream rappers. Drake has always outdone him commercially, even in his biggest year so far (2017).

Chance and Travis have NEVER rivaled Drake's success. Chance had a lot of clout back in 2016 but he was never a commercial juggernaut. All his top 10 hits are with Justin Bieber and the only album he's ever released flopped to hell and back. Travis was never a threat either. ASTROWORLD was boosted by bundles in it's first week, something Travis won't have whenever he releases his next album and Travis' biggest hit of his career was courtesy of Drake. Drake also had a bigger 2018 than Travis. Neither of those two have ever been a threat.

Didn’t DAMN outsell More Life? I said Kendrick never would beat Drake commercially but funny enough he actually did that year. 603K vs. 505K. Thanks for the reminder. Don’t act like Kendrick atleast didn’t challenge him creatively for a period of time.

Drake absolutely looked at Kendrick differently then the rest. People like to exaggerate their relationship and spin it into fan fiction. But their was definitely a period of time where Drake and Kendrick were throwing subs at each other. Drake wouldn’t have been throwing subs if he didn’t care or feel atleast a little intimidated.

I don’t know what’s you’re taking the time to dispute man. I also said Travis and Chance weren’t touching him. Both of them however, (Chance in 2016, Travis in 2018) had massive success at one point selling out arenas and were being talked about as the potential “next” one up. But they didn’t touch him.

DAMN. and More Life comparisons aren’t fair. That’s like comparing Scorpion (732k first week) to the Black Panther Soundtrack (154k). One’s a studio album (which will sell more) and one’s a compilation.

You need to compare their full length studio albums. Don’t get me wrong, DAMN.’s sales were impressive, especially because theres only 14 tracks on there But, it still sold over 100k less than Scorpion and over 350k less than Views first week.

Kendrick’s close, but he’s not at Drake’s level.

At the end of the day, both were still projects on streaming. People don’t usually include Black Panther when discussing Kendrick’s discography but people do include More Life when discussing Drakes.

Yeah, but that’s only half of the reason they sell the way they do. The labels market and push studio album much harder than compilations. When you add Drake’s name power to a studio album marketing push he can’t be touched by Kendrick

The biggest issue with More Life vs DAMN is More Life's lack of physicals and releasing on a Sunday instead of a Friday. Lost two days of sales. Idk if those two things would've made up the 100k gap but it would've been a lot closer
