People even attempting to mention Kanye is wild lol. Ye straight up has a huge cult following, MJ fame wasn't divisive.

MJ was actually very divisive in America from the mid 90's until death but he still was universally loved overseas.

I'll agree, cause of the pedo allegations, alot of people dropped him after that. But still, no ones an icon like MJ

I don't know about all that.

When I was a kid, people bumped MJ's classic music but he was heavily mocked, insulted, hated on, and disliked by the American media and White America.

You would see the pedo accusations get brought up all the time and he'd be openly called "Wacko Jacko" in many magazines.

Every time MJ would take an L, the media would be like "Wacko Jacko does it again" and the media would flip anything MJ said to be a bad thing. For instance, the media even tried to portray MJ as anti-semitic due to taking certain quotes completely out of context.

Also, his last album, Invincible, was panned heavily and had people even writing off MJ was a music artist, claiming he lost the sauce.

The American media from the mid-90's and onward was VERY anti-MJ until he died. I saw it first hand. In the 2000's, it was mostly Black folks and some people overseas who defended MJ in spite of the allegations. Eminem made a whole video mocking MJ and BET cut the video out and Stevie Wonder G checked Eminem but Just Lose It was still a major crossover hit that resonated with the "Wacko Jacko" crowd.

I'm probably the only one here old enough to remember Mike in his prime and no, nobody's been close to that level of global fame since. not Beyonce, not Gaga, not Taylor Swift and certainly not Kanye (go ahead and ask an old person in Asia or Europe who Kanye is and they probably won't know. MJ was known everywhere. There wasn't a debate about who was the biggest star on earth during the 80's.Every time he dropped an album, it was like the world stopped.
Eminem is probably the closest one. He's remained relevant for many years and he was HUGE around 2000-2005.

I agree. MJ still had tons of fans despite his controversies.

But the attacks on him were through the roofs and there were still many people who had anti-MJ sentiment. Even now, there's people who bring up MJ's accusations out of nowhere in music discussions.

A few interesting parallels between Thriller MJ and MMLP Em

    1. Their social identity combined with their awe-inspiring vocal and stage performing talents made them a novelty in their field

    2. They had a commanding vocal style

    3. Cinematic music videos for equally cinematic smash hits

If we're strictly talking fame and not musical popularity, Snoop Dogg might unironically be up there.

Going purely off name recognition, they're on the same level fs
