depends on where you live but imo all you need is a down jacket, two with one being a higher fill if you live in a cold cold climate. having a gore tex soft shell also essential, you could bypass even having any dedicated winter coats just w that almost anywhere.
thats just from a functional perspective tho
for winter all you need is one down jacket, having more is WAY better of course then u can chose the jacket for the activity you're doing

OP is from NYC but for some strange reason he wears the same jacket for the entire fall/winter stretch

did that for like 17 years it aint that crazy

Are you also from NYC too?? I literally don't know anyone else in the city who claims they're into fashion but only owns 1 warm jacket and that's it
NYC weather is way too extreme/unpredictable to rely on only 1 jacket
Even when I donate clothing homeless people in NYC request multiple jackets to layer with

im from canada fam it's way colder where i'm from. Down jackets are expensive a lot of people just own one parka to wear November-march

I understand but specifically in OP's case I don't understand how 1 down jacket is sufficient enough to survive in NYC when it's not even waterproof like a gore-tex shell jacket

trussss me, it's possible we've just gotten spoiled with owning multiple shells and coats. As a kid there'd be rips and holes all over my jacket every year from playing in snow without a waterproof jacket. Trust me when i say one canada goose is more than enough for the average adult going from their car to a building or waiting for the bus in the snow

If we talking about the entire year though? Yea you need at least a windbreaker for the wind/rain.

I totally feel you but now that we're adults I feel like we need at least 3 different types of jackets in your rotation to truly look presentable/professional
Also OP's 1 jacket isn't even Canada Goose he sold his old CG jacket last year
If you hypothetically lived in NYC (freezing rain/snow) like OP how many warm jackets would you probably have in your rotation??
At LEAST 3 but I would realistically have like 5-7. Anything more than that seems like a bit to me

OP doesn't believe in using umbrellas/windbreakers and owns zero pieces that are waterproof/windproof
That's why OP (my friend) created this thread we were having a debate on it because when we hang out on the coldest winter days he'll just wear a hoodie and that's it even when he knows we'll be outside all day long
At LEAST 3 but I would realistically have like 5-7. Anything more than that seems like a bit to me
I agree that's why I told OP 3-5 warm jackets is normal/realistic
But OP literally wants to only use 1 jacket for the entire year and it's not even a waterproof one
But you can still use that one winter jacket for the rain. Winter technically starts December 21st. Ain’t no one is wearing a work/denim jacket in true nyc weather LOL

You're delusional if you think you can wear a non-waterproof jacket outside every time it rains
That's literally how you end up with a jacket that smells bad
Also every fall 90% of the people in SoHo wear work jackets
This
How can you say "This" to that when he literally says it's "WAY better" to have more than 1 jacket but you're too stubborn to cop a 2nd one
I specifically don’t like layering tbh. when I go to wear I’d wear my dress shirt and throw on my winter jacket and call it a day.
i mean you can just layer some uniqlo heattech underneath and call it a day
I have 4 for different uses
Northface Waterproof Hyvent Aplha Series
Hooded peacoat
Long peacoat without hood
Carthart for rugged wear
I feel it's important to have 3 winter coats at least for me.
Black wool peacoat, grey wool zip jacket, and a black hooded Carhart
I'd swap the grey for a puffy grey goose though. I feel lacking without a puff coat rn
Not all outfits work with Carhart, not all outfits call for a wool peacoat, and puffy coats or north faces are just easy to throw on whenever
My exact thoughts

Great rotation
Also the fact that your TNF is waterproof is key too
jackets are a scam by the fashion industry. you only really need one or two but they are routinely the most fire AND most expensive items on offer from every brand/retailer

Yeah my Northface is my favorite one

I've had it for literally over 10 years and have only had to replace it once. It's lightweight and functional
