    deep pockets

I was told it wasn’t his era so who cares?

Told it was his era... by who?

Why are you ignoring that the decline started in 2023?

Drake has what? 5 albums and countless features since 2023?

Looks like the genre is imploding from all the slop him and artists like him have been s***ting out for years now

If you ask me, I think it’s a good thing, this is a very interesting transition era in the arts in general and I feel grateful that I get to observe it

Wonder how much this has to do with late 90s/early 2000s culture coming back to Gen Z / alpha

That’s when rock was admittedly dying out but also still had a lot of popularity

I’ve even seen mid 2000s emo/scene culture coming back, s*** even some rap artists have been emulating that aesthetic

i don't think it has anything to do with that because for decades even in the 20th century people were being inspired and cribbing sounds from previous decades like the sampling people were doing in the 90s of music from the 60s and 70s

it's up to the new generation to break the doors down of the incumbents. kendrick wasn't embraced by the west coast because he was the only new guy there were a bunch of guys making music but kendrick was clearly special, same with cudi, cole, drake, even big sean who gets clowned now. everybody who was good enough to kind of kick out the old guard has passed away

purely entertainment and is the stated goal of the company they worked with in making

Vanessa and Kendrick are friends via Kobe. Nipsey’s partner thought it was powerful art

It's not framing, hip-hop is slowly losing its market share of new music engagement compared to other genres. It has the second-lowest percentage of Current (0-18 months old) music streams, with only Rock lower than it, and it has the second-highest percentage of Deep Catalog (60 months and older) streams, with only Rock higher than it:

makes sense, mainsream hip-hop been so boring for a minute, no real new rising stars

plus music in general is becoming hyper-compartmentalized as algorithms continue to push people into specific micro-niches, which isn't necessarily a bad thing

  • We need Kendrick to save hip-hop for the 3rd time again

King will be here next year 👑

  • mainstream hip hop is completely out of touch with what people want from albums ngl

its like everyone is stuck in the 2016-2020 streaming era dropping 20+ track albums tryna stat pad

  • All the drake fans doing the “i thought kendrick would save hip hip” thing in a thread that actually makes they mans 3peat this year look bad….are funny man lol

  • half jokingly I wonder if a lot of ppl are like me where they love a lot of hip hop still but simply can’t play it in their car because they can’t afford to fix one blown out speaker that rattles every time it encounters poorly mixed 808s

  • that surf gang x earl Chicago song blew out my front driver side speaker lol

I don't think it's that era specifically. Nostalgia is in right now across all forms of entertainment as physical media keeps dying. For most of Gen Z that's the earliest era they can remember so that's what they emulate.

It also has a two part effect because of the higher quality songwriting then compared to their current era, and for as much as they love to do the whole vibes > lyrics thing everybody loves quality songwriting that stands the test of time

Imagine if Drake didn’t drop this year. In the “dot era”… holy s*** the genre would be below like jazz music on the charts
