to be very fair, Lil Pump and the first wave of artists doing that type of music were so out of what we were used to that I don’t think Drake got it at the time. Cole even admitted to this in the yachty interview. But guys like Trippie, Pump, Peep, X, etc walked so these new guys were accepted to a certain extent. (Coming from someone that never liked Pump unironically btw)
That’s what I’m saying the Yeats and the Opiums of the game rn are closer that that crop of artists you named then they are to Lil Pump and Smoke Purrp.
“My Bwah” tryna switch his voice to sound southern and all
https://twitter.com/uziawge/status/1724836521629376549That boy get round some Carolina/Atlanta niggas and turn into a Southern Style Chicken Sandwich
What the f*** lmaoooo
Hiphop in terms of albums hasn’t been exciting since 2018
Of course people still drop amazing albums with a real artistic vision from time to time but it’s getting more & more rare
I feel like for my gen, 2015 was when hiphop peaked. It was becoming the most popular genre in the world but we still had a mix of old school based lyrical rap and the fun mindless trap bangers. Speaking of which, it also was still a new sound at the time which means it wasn’t oversaturated at that point
And that’s fax
That’s the thing that’s been confusing if you were like in high school before 2016 lol
The standards of what people consider bars from certain people like Veeze or karrahboo, Wayne and Big Sean was getting killed for in 2011 lol
The standards dropped honestly a lot in 2016 when that XXL freshman cover style of rap took over / Migos - Culture
Bro Veeze would’ve gotten smoked in 2011
That narrative of a rapper dropping a mid album so he’s done and can never bounce back always pissed me off lol
Even back in 08 when 808s dropped people hated it but let Ye bounce back with MBDTF lol it feels like that wouldn’t happen now
And also writing off an artists legacy because their newer s*** always been dumb to me.
When people debate MJ Vs Lebron they’re not talking about their later runs they’re talking about their primes lol
yeah tbh i don’t take the “he released too much trash after his prime to be considered a goat” type talk seriously, it’s dumb as s***
we grade artists based on their peak, this doesn’t discount any of their later work or any of their other s*** afterwards but it shouldn’t completely degrade what they have done if it turns out to be ass
every artist suffers from quality control or drops some bullshit if they go at it long enough
That’s what I’m saying the Yeats and the Opiums of the game rn are closer that that crop of artists you named then they are to Lil Pump and Smoke Purrp.
Yeah but that doesn’t make Opium any better than X & them. They don’t make captivating music like that and all of it sounds the same whereas X had depth and personality with his stuff.

The funny thing is: OP will write off Kanye and Eminem as a whole because some of their late career albums weren't good.
But he won't hold other rappers to that same standard.
Stan culture is a disease.
you know what the kicker is? Vultures sounds better than a lot of that generic trap s*** but mfs wanna complain about it because… they just hate Kanye lmao
Vultures sounds like a generic drill song instead
I see what you're getting at, but the Logics of rap would still be there if Eminem stopped releasing music. Maybe if you retroactively erased his discography, but his influence will always be there.
And I just feel rap is a right wing genre. The bragging about wealth and material possessions is very easy for the right to co-opt, with or without Kanye. And Kanye's persona has far surpassed his music. He can never drop again and still have the influence he does
I think people forget that Logic’s main influences are actually Cole, Drake and Kendrick lol

Trap wasn’t new in 2015 but I feel you on everything else

I’m not saying they are better. And tbh xxx was talented and a good rapper but he was just making three days grace, mid 2000s YouTube AMV music as a nigga with locs and face tats. Niggas never seen that s*** so they hyped it up more than it was

veeze is great but it does give me a little bit of a jolt to hear this nigga say s*** like “let’s compare banks mines pretty like Tyra” when Wayne would get killed for his similes way back then all the time
im a huge fan of any type of wordplay like that but it’s like these niggas be dropping the standards whenever they feel like it

If Ye didn’t put on the hat, I still feel like Ye would have been rated a lot higher than it is. People wanted to hate him and he gave them a mid album and this has gone on ever since.
i would take a million Logic’s in this world if it meant getting rid of this rage music bs for eternity

Stan culture sucks and Is one of the main issues holding hiphop back
Part of what made hiphop dope was the discussion surrounding albums. The competitive aspect of rap is what dates back to the golden era of hiphop ofc but stan culture brought in too many people that don’t care about the art form. It’s an abyss full of echo chambers, close mindedness and dumbass memes at this point
But I'm glad the overseas market still f***s with Shady.
Americans like the OP will call Eminem trash and act like Rylo Rodriquez is a lyrical genius.
Meanwhile, Em still gets tons of respect and streams overseas.

Ye is pretty popular and loved by the casuals lol

I’m just glad niggas finally realized Wayne and his style of rapping was always fire and it was them that didn’t get it

Lol no cap I think niggas would just be like this cool or whatever but that press run fueled the fire
