Personally think rap is fine gotten a lot of new, good music from a lot of major artists. Maybe some people just never connected with the music in the first place and were prisoners of the moment? Idk what I’d do if I wasn’t able to juxtapose Kendrick with, let’s say, Lil Baby. I’d get bored.
Being able to go from something like United in Grief to FR is a gift to me and I’m glad to have access to it all. I can’t f*** with someone like Yachty thinking he an artist now cause he made psychedelic rock, he was always an artist and probably even more creative while making rap. Oh well, I’m happy with rap and where it continues to go. We just getting started
Old heads born in the 80s want the 90s back and it isn’t happening
Old heads like me born in the early 90s want to see another renaissance like we saw in the blog era but it’s never happening
Mid 90s babies want to see another SoundCloud resurgence like we had with the emo rap wave but it’s not happening either.
We are at the mercy of the youth and what the youth like. Attention spans are shorter than ever. There is no artistry in this s*** anymore on a commercial level. Yes we have lesser known artists and our personal favorites who still give us legitimate artistry. But the problem is as we age someone else has to take over. We don’t even get legitimate commercial superstars anymore. Everything sounds the same. Everything aims to be Tik tok bait now since that’s the best way to catch a buzz. Making music is far too accessible now that people who have no business doing so can make a quick catchy 1-2 minute track and go viral.
Again. We can’t rely on the 27+ club to make music forever. We also have to acknowledge that the youth aren’t making music for us. The dynamic of how kids digest music is even different now where what they like today they hate tomorrow. There is no nostalgia for any of it. It’s just forgotten and what’s next.
Idk. I used to feel like I was just being a stubborn old man and I try to be open minded. But nah. This s*** really just sucks.
The funny part is it’s not just the trap music being over saturated. Even these younger conscious artists kinda suck too. It’s just bad all around atm
Nah you’re right I feel your cynicism. The optimist in me wants to believe that somehow there will me a culturally shift all around, not just in hip hop.
I think about concepts like the “fourth turning”. We are currently in THE fourth turning right now and maybe, hopefully, there will be a cultural reset soon. Idk what that’ll look like tho.
Yeah Hip Hop is in a huge decline rn but only good things will come from this imo. It’s going to weed out the vultures. I predict that lyricism will make a come back and we’ll see a rise in creative rappers again.
The last time Hip Hop had a huge decline was around 2008 during the snap music era and that ushered in the wave of Drake, Kendrick, Cole, Rocky, Cudi, Chief Keef etc.

I hate this topic cause we never hear arguments for the other perspective. Rap is fine to me as there is something for everyone and we don’t give our genre of artists enough time to just continue making what works for them on a consistent basis cause we’re to exhausted from listening to so much music
op sexy as f***
Just another part of the cycle. Buy low Sell high
It’s fascinating how well have this convo over and over but this is probably one of the biggest resources to create a platform to solve it whether it’s this site itself (Lowkey/KTT2) expanding into a platform or the collection of minds on here
Aside from social media and stylistic things that will never come back, a lack of a platform is the biggest problem. 106 and Park is where I fell in love with this s*** as a kid
that's cause everyone complains but no one wants to come up with solutions or back the 'homegrown' artists trying on here until they get a cosign lol.
which is fine. Guess you can attribute it to human nature. But yeah, ktt2 bringing back "blog era" type of discovering new artists would be pretty cool. But I'm sure money would have to be involved that s don't got respectfully.
I like burna boy or rema as much as the next person
But look at burnas streaming numbers compared to idk lil uzi…
Rappers are still more popular
It’s evolving but what the people who tryna look cool consume (mainstream niggas) is dead hip hop fasho

He been an artist since Minnesota. It’s disingenuous to link being an artist with exploring other genres aside from rap. Rap is an art form, he didn’t prove s*** we all didn’t already know

It’s not disingenuous
Could you see Pooh Shiesty doing a psychedelic rap album? Well at that.
He evolved and it shows
It’s not hip hop. Culture is dead. There will never be a vital music or art movement again
Latin music isn’t the replacement, social media is. People will still listen to music but the need for it isn’t the same. Social media has replaced the desire for art for most regular people. Music is just a secondary thing, something for the background of a meme.
In the past decade, any intelligence and consciousness of the public has been conditioned out. Art can’t thrive in these conditions.
The corporations won
It’s not disingenuous

I could easily see Pooh Shiesty doing psychedelic rap. Again, you’re discrediting artists and their capabilities. The intro to Nudy’s recent album is literally a lo-fi beat if he heard a psychedelic rap beat and it hit his ears right and he felt he could tell a story on it, then why not? I don’t even get your point

You capped out brutha
There of tons of artist who wouldn’t touch that s*** cuz they not tryna be on no white hot s***
You capped out brutha
Nah you not giving artists a chance. Gucci, who is Pooh’s leaders, is one of the most creative minds in music all the way to World War 3: Lean. But you niggas just parrot opinions without actually listening and giving niggas a chance.
This nigga made psychedelic rock and all of a sudden that signifies growth smh. What about his Detroit rap album which was also showed artistic growth? Was that not good enough?
Hip hop is so alive y’all just getting old
This s*** Dead fr but if in the next couple years it doesn’t have a shift it’s gonna end up just like rock music something for the people that lived through it can just reminisce that’s why even ice cube is trying to do corridos bruh knows this s*** dead and needs to make a bag somehow even if how he approaches it is trash
