Yup these are great questions and ones that I was thinking about while making this thread

Tbh you guys are kind of right, in that sense that it’s not really fair to box HOB in a “pop” label because as you said the structure of it blends into other genres

My take is that pop music shouldn’t be defined by sound at all i know many will disagree but I personally think the fact that you see similar structural elements in so many different genres, makes it so you can’t really define pop music by a sound.

Like in the 60s, “pop music” was The Beatles, yet in 2010s, “pop music” was Taylor Swift. So I think it’s a bit of a slippery slope to try and define a pop genre based on sound, which is why I try to look at structure of songs and go from there.

But at the same time if a song follows the exact same structure as Wicked Games, but the instrumentation is all heavy metal or what not I probably wouldn’t call that pop music, even though it’s got the same structure

Like I said it’s a slippery slope and can’t really give any concrete answers since it’s all opinion based

yeah i think it would just become a never ending cycle. i'd like to know how the producers/artists actually making the music would categorize it. or maybe they wouldn't.

i don't think you're entirely wrong. i can see the weeknd in the studio with doc and ill and being like, ok, let's make a pop song for the record. and then wicked games comes about. but if they were describing the project as a whole i'd be interested to see whether they would label it as pop or acknowledge if that was the mindset they were in while making it.

I would also love to see what the production of it was like. I don’t think they were like “okay this song needs to have a contrasting C section in relation to the A section” lol but it is interesting to think about

Also interesting to note that Cirkut produced High For This, at the time he was making hits like Domino by Jessie J, Good Feeling by Flo Rida, Part of Me by Katy Perry, etc... so he was no stranger to the “pop” world even in 2011

yeahhh but if we're tryna get rid of narratives, that's one that should be first in line too.

off topic but i don't think it's ever really this fan base against that fan base. it's simply people saying it's my artist against ANYBODY. and that's where it gets whack.

we need more grownups on the site and actual substantial music discussions like this. even tho no answers were found lol and that is ok cause all this s*** is subjective at the end of the day!
