One of the things that doesn't get brought up a lot when discussing pop music is song structure. Song structure is basically just the blueprint for the direction in which a song will go, which is one of the biggest gripes about pop music because the structure of the songs almost always follows the same formula, that's what makes it "pop music".
Said song structure typically consists of an INTRO followed by a VERSE (A), (sometimes a PRE CHORUS in between these) HOOK (B), VERSE (A), HOOK (B), BRIDGE (C), and then finally the HOOK (B) again, and sometimes followed by an outro. A (pc) B A (pc) B C B is what we're looking at here.
HOB is chock full of songs that mimic this form almost perfectly.

Also when do you think The Weeknd “started making pop”? Because he’s been getting the “you changed” comments since 2013 lol
This some facts
People really been faulting his transition to pop since Wanderlust
Thread makes no sense
How so?
Lmao this is the most reductive line of thinking
Hob has pop song structure -> its a pop album -> weeknd has never changed up he always been pop
Sonics matter dog idc if it goes verse chorus verse The Knowing is not a pop song
Yall Putting HOB over Blonde or CO?????
this thread isn't comparing HOB to any other projects. make a thread man

Good idea lol I just tried but I'm unable to make threads
So the answer is YES The Weeknd DOES have a better pop album than Bruno Mars.
Edit: this post was just a fun jab pls don't take it as seriously as some of yall have lmao
there it is
I made that Bruno post so people didn’t come itt and say “you just made this thread bc of Bruno Mars”
Wanted to beat them to the punch even though this isn’t really about him, it’s more so about the “turned pop” thing I mentioned earlier
I also would like to see House of Balloons mentioned in pop album discussions
I mean if u wanna compare wicked games to thats what i like do so by any means but imma look at u like the crackhead u are

Who's doing that ITT?
While I'm not sure I completely agree (HoB has always been R&B to me)
By the time we reached Echoes of Silence, he had become pop
There is an incoherence (the good kind) to HoB & Thursday that prevents them from being straight pop records for me, although across the two there are certainly flashes of the genre. . . Wicked Games, The Morning, The Birds etc.
But by the time we reach EoS - that transition was in full swing. EoS, is easily the most commercial of the three mixtapes and legit opens with him covering a pop classic
Interesting thread

Agreed. Thursday is the biggest outlier IMO because it is much less reliant on form, and has more of those freeform songs that people think of when they talk The Weeknd & Trilogy (Gone, Thursday, The Zone...)
HOB and EOS are much more similar
Good idea lol I just tried but I'm unable to make threads
We just had two of these threads already
@guwop1017
Weeknd went in a different direction starting with Wanderlust and Can’t Feel My Face when he started making songs that actually had pop sensibilities, even if the structure didnt change that doesnt mean he was still making the same music
We just had two of these threads already
when has that ever stopped anyone, i just didn't want this thread f***ed up
Structure is not the be all end all when it comes to defining pop lmao
we've been over that. the thread is only 5 pages, if you wanted to contribute to it it's not a long read lol.
Structure is not the be all end all when it comes to defining pop lmao
then what is? I'm not saying structure is but pop music is not defined by any sort of sound as history (and this thread) would tell you
