Even in the apology right after the concert he looked unconcerned about the situation.
I'm not surprised in the slightest. Bot that I would even bother listening to his album on the first place.
Album of the year
Houston Chronicle is right wing now ?
Way to miss the point
have been a rise in twitter account, IG accounts, rap blogs, Snapchat blogs, etc all run by white kids that all treat rap like a zoo and/or post hip hop in a negative light in the past few years like DailyBeast or RealRapAlert or any bullshit page like that
They set the tone for how hip hop is viewed by the masses writ large
Most people just see hip hop thru the few pop singles and s***
So when they see rap is only in the news for s*** like YB going to jail for the 7th time, or X,Y, Z rapper shows off wicked lean collection (also caught with lean) or some other s*** it all just (whether intentional and malicious or not)
Just further cements in their mind hip hop is a unserious genre for “them” folks. But it has some cool bangers! (It’ll never be real music tho)
We see it even on this site lol, post Nazi Ye incident and registration opening up + the collective push away from trap/hip hops of the 2020s this decade
You got people just openly saying how the genre is trash or how they only like x,y artist so rap is finished or I got bored or rap now I’m listening to indie pop or some s***
The timing of this release feels genuinely petty. Not saying any of this should remain in a vault, but Travis beat the trial fair and square. Trying to sensationalize the case by releasing this the same day as his first album in five years after dude paid his dues and took his lumps with this disaster is just unnecessary. We're all keenly aware of what happened and they coulda waited a week to put it out and nobody would've blinked.

Hip Hop has never needed outside help to paint itself in a negative light lol
Hip Hop has never needed outside help to paint itself in a negative light lol
I never said it did. I said there are incentives now to capitalize off broadcasting the more negative aspects of hip hop for entertainment the past few years
I don’t think you even read what I said before to say this
Still crazy to me that he doesn't acknowledge them or show any sort of remorse on the album.
Hip Hop has never needed outside help to paint itself in a negative light lol
tbh that's not even true
hip hop really began to take on a negative image for itself with the uprising of Dre's solo career tbh. it was never perfect or even progressive before that really, certainly not as a rule, but Dre's really frankly boneheaded but beautiful take on gangsta rap is what really made that shift in perception for the genre pop off.
gonna get s*** on for this take but it's facts and plenty of hip hop OGs acknowledge it

Yes companies are generally incentivized to cater to what the consumers want.

So then what was the point of quoting me as if what I said was false lol, we can both agree to that then

Consumers are often conditioned to wanting certain content and have their tastes and mindsets largely molded by external factors though, namely the people pulling the strings in the mainstream media who get to set the narrative
He actually pays tribute on My Eyes
scotty would save him a child line?
scotty would save him a child line?
Yeah
Dude isn't exactly known for his lyricism in all fairness, none of his rapping dug deep into much of anything, so it's on brand for his artistic oeuvre

It’s a weird placement of blame. Media treats hip hop like zoo largely because it is and we the consumers have culpability in who we have given our attention to, and the culture we have allowed to ferment.
I don’t think we disagree when it comes down to brass tacks but I think we all have some blame, myself included , for the proliferation of negative aspects and artists in rap

I don’t disagree, but I’d say specifically in this instance major media players capitalized on a pre existing fondness for violence and depravity that was around long before became the mainstream cultural wave again
Yeah

that line is barely paying tribute, sounds super full of himself. I’d rather him take action or tell us how he feels than act like a child saver in his lyrics when the reality is that they were dying in front of him

Oh for f*** sakes
utopia is a great album and my eyes is one of my favs but travis is a horrible human being, we know this since his come up story

But the media turned hip hop into a "zoo", as you describe it
After the surge of gangsta rap in the early 90s acts like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Eric B. & Rakim were thrust back underground while rap labels would frankly refuse to promote any acts that weren't either egregiously violent or macho in their aesthetics and musically. Prior to that, those guys were Platinum+ artists. Even N.W.A. balance itself out with political commentary, as did Ice-T and even Too Short.
