  • He isn't in my top 5, but there's almost 30 years worth of valid reasons as for why he is in many people's top fives. For that, I don't argue anyone who says he is in their top five and is the greatest rapper of all time...mostly cause I am not tryna have my ear talked off by Jay Z stans.

Actual overrated ppl are the Adele’s, Taylor, Ed Sheehan, Eminem and Drake

Exactly so why do ppl pretend that he’s the epitome of great music (like prince/MJ/Stevie) when he gets s***ted on (the past 10 years atleast) at almost every turn. he’s respected because of his longevity but the ppl acting like he’s seen in this grandiose light by the GP is reaching.. even rappers of today don’t hold him to high esteem. U can’t be overrated if the majority of ppl don’t see u as the best to begin with. Drake, Wayne and Kanye are out on a WAYY higher pedestal and ppl use undermine Jay’s music to prop up whoever they feel doesn’t receive the same amount of attention/love

He isn’t. People are capping. It’s just that again him and Beyoncé have supreme marketing and are put as the epitome of black success in general. D*** dealer turned rapper into sophisticated businessman who marries the “good girl” pop star who has a cult following. Legend stuff. But in terms of music, Jay Z was never the consensus best rapper ever in his life, he had the benefit of being from the rap media capital and marrying the hottest females pop artist in the game in her prime.

  • Hov being 'The most overrated rapper OAT' is such a horrific take lmaooo

there are plenty of other acts worthy of that title IMO

Hov is legit an all time great, worthy of significant praise for the simple fact that he's taken a rap career farther than anyone ever has. High quality rapping from 96' to 2021' is insane.

I do think his status as like, the "Michael Jordan" and Michael Jackson of Rap is flat out not true, and he's overrated in that regard. I think there are a couple of rappers that could have and have gotten on his level rap wise, especially since 2010, but he's solidified obviously.

Like, Hov cc. has done a tremendous job of making him some all time, untouchable Rap / Hip-Hop / mogul supernova hybrid and I'm just like...no?

But his longevity is legitimately crazy and worth immense praise.

My hot take was that Hip-Hop prior to 09' was in a bad, bad state which helped propel Hov to like, crazy untouchable status. But since then, we've seen guys that are just as good as him and the game catch up to him but w/e, he's still an all time great.

“have supreme marketing and are put as the epitome of black success” - I don’t understand this sentiment either.. what out of this world PR do they have that’s different from any other artist/star.. they don’t promote, don’t market their music, don’t interact with social media fans, don’t so roll outs. beyonce ain spoke in damn near 10 years and the music don’t have longevity due to poor marketing strategies after initial drop.. this supposed legendary PR that gets thrown around is overblown too.

He’s overrated because I feel like a lot of people don’t really to his catalog like that. He’s viewed as the epitome of success, but you ask people to name 5 solo Jay z songs, a lot of people will struggle, young or old if they’re not from NY.

Hov's a scumbag but he IS the epitome of success, tf you on? He has a billi in the bank and more

Yeah but like, other than Lil Wayne's run in the mid 00's, and Kanye (who's debut came out in the early 00's) there was no one else who could really box with Jay-Z is my point. By 09' it was pretty stale, and rappers chasing hits and ringtone joints were all the rage.

It wasn't until Drake / J. Cole / Kendrick / and a host of others came along that Hip-Hop finally started producing more legacy acts and acts with all time great rapper potential.

I clown Jay sometimes but he's definitely top 5 DOA. He checks off way too many boxes.

Drake got ya'll thinking charts matter so much when many legendary rappers aren't heavy on the charts like that.

Doesn’t matter if he’s a scumbag. He’s viewed as the epitome of success in black culture in general. Real rags to riches story too
