Forreal though, like theirs a few that are connected and respected (Mozzy, Larry June, AllBlack etc) but outside of G-Eazy and 24kgldn(who don’t even sound like he from the bay) no one has ever really gotten mainstream big from NorCal in decades?

What it about that region that don’t pop off?

  • Sep 18, 2021

Cause MC Hammer set the bar too high.

  • Sep 18, 2021

But nah. On a serious note, its cause major labels are way more concentrated in LA than the Bay.

SoCal always had a stronger music industry and is home to labels like Ruthless, Death Row, Aftermath, TDE, etc.

NorCal has more of an independent grind and hustle and most Bay rappers weren't that interested in appeal to markets outside the West Coast so they made more "regional sounding" music on average compared to LA.

Only listened to Larry June but I don’t think he had a sound that would’ve been commercially successful given the climate at the time

Bay Area not caring about mainstream is what makes it so goat tbh

The sound isn’t all watered down by current trends n s***.

When everyone sounding like atl or drill or whatever is poppin atm.. the bay gonna sound like the bay.

Calm down brother I’m from Detroit so it’s my obligation to keep the conspiracy alive. Mostly kidding tho, I know there’s a deep bond between the two areas, I just feel like Detroit rappers offer what Bay Area ones do but have a bit more mainstream appeal so that kinda makes it hard for NorCal ones to succeed

Yay Area has imho some of the best rap music ever and has always kept its own flavour. There's no mainstream success that can beat that level of authenticity

  • Sep 18, 2021

    1. Detroit has a similar style and labels/ the industry is far more established there

    2. There has never been a unified mainstream movement in the bay, so Multiple non-native producers and rappers co-opted the hyphy movement without any major artists coming to rep the bay in the 2010’s

    3. Most artists who DO arrive end up stagnating, not making quality music, not managing themselves correctly, or moving in directions not tied to their hometown

This is a big trade off

I never want the bay to go mainstream for the sake that there’s a level of community that’s perfectly satisfied with where we’re at

Tbh I feel u. Detroit I feel grew under the radar when no one was looking and developed a crazy scene.

Plus they do got allot of charismatic rappers

And their twist on Bay music (theyre more like sister cities though with that bond so idk it feels like they both grew together) is refreshing.
