If one reaches the grand mullah status he then gets to issue Fatwas. Fatwas are religious rulings and don't have expiry dates. Idiot supporters may act on it for decades and centuries to come.
I give you an example. There is a Fatwa in islamic theology that when the enemy is hiding within civilian populated areas the jihadists have the right to attack and if innocent people die Allah will make it up to them. You can find the Fatwa in the comprehensive works of Ibn Taymmyyah which dates back to the 13th century. Mullahs use this to justify killing innocent people and their islamist supporters accept it. Hadiths are collections of traditions based on the "sayings of Muhammad". These collection of sayings were gathered by Mullahs in Middle ages.Jihad is fight against enemies of Islam.
Mullahs are by nature imperialists. The expansion of Islam after the 7th century mirrors the roman empire. Their main goal was to expand, increase population in numbers and tax people. One of the methods of converting people to islam was that non-muslims had to pay a higher tax "jaziyeh" compared to muslims tax "zakat". You do the maths.
Also you are misinformed about Mullahs not having power historically. Many of the kings were very religious and had Mullah Viziers that run most things. Mullahs also acted as supreme Judges in islamic courts since they were the ones familiar with sharia law.
Historically arts and sciences prevailed during the eras with less religious kings in charge.That's a video of a guy running after the Mullah screaming get out. It's very tiresome living in a country run by mullahs. Listening to them talk messes with your wellbeing.

Look up Sayid Qutb book in the Shade of Quran. He conceptualized The guardianship of the islamic jurist in the 50s. His work is inspiration to islamist leaders and played a big part in Mullahs comeback during 70s.
