I thought of this years ago with like pre BBTM weeknd james blake toro y moi type artists who have that perfect sweet spot of casuals kinda knowing them (maybe not for jane remover) and yet not being looked at as mainstream puppet type acts

James blake has an amazing voice
Weeknd is basically the new mj

U cant even rly look up to these guys cus theyre that good. If anyone was as good as them theyd be successful

Those might be the wrong specific names but in general theres a lane of artists like that who surpass just typical music demographic segmentation or marketing and are almost kind of genreless

But in trying to think of examples you are right in that most the names im thinking of just make crazy unique 1 of 1 music (cashmere cat, frou frou, imogen heap, sampha, etc.)

In general its so hard to imagine getting anything popping online outside of the big 3-5 Social media networks

yea i think if u make a marginal effort to promote ur music, and its good, in 2025 theres so many options, i got 3 new dms from artists today on discord i jus noticed lol, an my music isnt even that good

as an absolute that's def not really true. a wide variety of factors can make or break an otherwise exceptionally talented individual's chances, anything from lack of networking ability, life/trauma or pure bad luck. talent doesn't seem to be even close to the most importantly thing for getting on, that's just what they want you to believe. i also don't care for putting these people on a pedestal especially when you're not even highlighting their main abilities in james' case lol he's so much more than that voice. also he has some nepo connections not that he would've been incapable of getting where he was without them or anything

all those people you mentioned also have really strong images which is probably one of if not the most important thing
